Tyre vandalism?

Post by alistair-h » Sat Oct 20, 2018 7:54 pm

Hello everyone,

I've had my M140i for about 2 months now. A couple of days ago, a tyre pressure warning came up for the front left tyre. I've taken it to the petrol station and refilled the tyre, reset the system and driven away. Shortly afterwards, the warning is back. I've now taken a look at the tyre itself and I found a pretty large screw of some kind with a star shaped head so I guess it has been vandalised by someone as it looks pretty deliberate. Seems that it has been screwed into the tyre? Would love to hear some thoughts on it.

Thanks,

Alistair

Why do think it’s been screwed in by someone ?

It will likely just be you've run over it. One nail in one tyre doesn't suggest vandalism to me. I've had a few screws over the years.

If someone really wants to upset you they screw it into the sidewalls. It does look a bit too the edge for repair anyway.

I didn't really think it could be accidental from looking at it but after talking to a few people they think I've just ran over it as Kerr said. I'm hoping it can be a repair rather than a replacement tyre :|

I once had a 10 mm thick screw punch while rolling... Very audible.
Also so long, that the tip touched the inner rim!
I repaired the tire, but kept it as a spare - it wasn't safe enough for everyday driving.

Blimey. This isn't actually making any noise so I guess it's only just touching the road surface. Hoping it can be repaired until I can get it replaced.

As mentioned Alistair I wouldn't lose sleep over this as I doubt it was deliberately done by anyone. It's unlucky but it does happen.

I've had a couple of near identical screws in my tyre tread over the years, highly unlikely to be vandalism in my opinion. Just get it plugged for £10 and forget about it.

Jealous dickheads usually resort to scratching 6 or 8 body panels, far quicker to inflict much more damage.
