Carb cleaner or the like usually works well for this sort of thing I've found - although I've not actually cleaned the Vanos units - although I intend too!

I have similar hesitation problem on my 130i, it felt like the throttle is cut for a split second (many be 0.5 sec or so) during high rev. The sensation is a bit like hitting the rev limiter.
It happens everytime under the following circumstances;
- All traction control off (press and hold for 5sec). I have a Quiafe LSD, only drive this car with everything off.
- At 6000rpm on 4th or 5th gear. It never happened on 1st/2nd/3rd gears.
- Under full throttle. I don't recall having this problem on same rev/gear but say, at 70% throttle.
- Engine under load, nothing will happen if I rev it at Neutral.

I changed engine oil (LL03 5W30), all six spark plugs, all six coils and fuel pump, did not solve the problem.
The car generally felt normal anywhere below 6000rpm, It will hesitate at 6000rpm, them rev up prompty to the red line. The computer gives no error code.

It felt though the car does not have the power at 6000~7000rpm it used to have.
Oh, the car is 2006 built and have 110,000km on the clock.
I have the problem solved on my N52B30 engine finally, so would like to share what I found out.

Problem:
- 6000rpm ~ 7000rpm slight hesitation/missfire. It happens on all gear, just more apparent on 4th/5th gear because of the longer gearing.
- Reduced engine power overall. The car used to pull all the way to 240km/h without problem, with the engine issue it goes to about 210km/h and is almost unable to accelerate further.
- No engine code found.
- General poor fuel consumption. Estimate to be 15% worse.

Tried:
- Change to stock spec engine oil = didn't help.
- Change all six spark plug = didn't help.
- Change fuel pump = didn't help.
- Change all six fuel injectors = problem solved, all the power is back, no more missfire.

Just thought I'd dig this up.

I too have just bought a 130i showing the same sub 2k problems as everyone else has described after filling with a tank of 98 Ron?

In any gear at sub 2k when I accelerate hard I get a hesitation and the car sounds like it's bogging down.

With this I also get rough running from cold in the sub 2k region and on restart from warm the idle seems to hunt around until you rev the engine or about 5 seconds of hunting.

Got the extended warranty on the car so hopefully will get it booked into bmw this week and let them fix it!

I suspect the vanos solenoids are the issue and I also suspect a coil may be faulty. It probably needs plugs as well.

Well I've just rang the warranty. Not quite what I expected. It ran out in September so it's now going to be a fresh policy and is a little more than I had expected.

What are peoples thoughts here? On the phone the lady said they won't fix any existing problems. How do they know it's existing if I don't book the car in for a month or so?

Are the error codes stored in the ECU dated and timed?

Funnily enough my stutter started after a tank of 98RON??!!

I'd go with a faulty coil, pretty easy to fix and if you need fresh plugs anyway you'll need to take them off to do that. Although I had no cold idle issues.

Do you have any warning lights on (ie EML/engine management light)? If not then it's likely there will be no error codes to read, which was my problem with every garage I tried. The computer wouldn't tell them what was wrong so they weren't interested. That's when I tried to look myself and found the faulty coil.

My plan is to get new plugs and change them, then pull the solenoids out and give them a good clean.

I'll see if the problem persists then.

Will narrow it down to the coils/ solenoids.

Car is at 57k, seems that most people experience the solenoids at about 50k too.

Hoping it's not to much of a ball ache - can get the solenoids for £150 for the pair so not the end of the world.

What plugs do you recommend?
