Sky Insurance won't insure BMWs?!!

Post by Andi » Mon Dec 10, 2018 2:58 pm

Quite surprised to see Sky Insurance are a sponsor, considering what I've just been told....

I've owner a modified Focus ST for the last few years, all insured with Sky, and been very happy with the service, so early this year I rang up when I was looking at new cars, and was told they'd cover me for an extra £85 a year, but only if I had a tracker! Result.

So now, a few months on, my new car arrives this week, so rang up to arrange the date of transfer.

"Sorry, the underwriter won't insure BMWs due to the claim rates"

Thanks for that, I've just ordered a brand new car and spent extra on a tracker on the back of the quote you gave me..

They wouldn’t insure me unless I fitted a tracker or a Thatcham approved anti OBD theft device. I went elsewhere. Mind you it wasn’t as patronising as the phone call I had with Chris Knotts insurance when I first bought my m240. They asked about my experience with RWD vehicles which is 330ci....325ti.....335d....plus 14 years NCB no claims or convictions. They said “it’s a bit of a step up for you, try again next year”. Needless to say, I won’t be trying again.

Dare say the comfort access thefts don't help but that aint particular to BMW's though but from an Mlite point of view and looking at Youtube etc i can see alarm bells ringing all over the place insurance wise with the younger hoodlum fraternity and the ease of turning the engines up to crazy mode, coupled with easy access cheap no deposit PCP deals...

The culture emerging around Mlites is what will doom them insurance wise it;s slowly but surely pushing up premiums..Hot hatch syndrome from the 90's coming back again if it keeps going they will end up uninsurable to most and worth nothing in the process...

Chris Knott are also a forum sponsor:

My 135i has more power, more torque and is lighter than an M2, Ive been driving RWD turbos since I was 19 and have done at least 5 trackdays a year for the last 10 years. Really?

Knott has come up numerous times, across many forums, for refusing to quote for some tedious reasons.

They are selective who they touch.

Most insurance companies would run a mile at such statements they can afford to be real fussy with cars that are becoming more notorious these days as they become older and more affordable downstream, the very owners of them and their habits is what is driving it all in the first place...

My renewal is jumping by around £300! It’s ridiculous. (Full NCB’s, no points, no claims).

But I think you hit the nail on the head here! Especially re the PCP deals.

And like racey1979 I got grilled (patronisingly) about my experience with “fast cars” in general!

Unless PCP deals are kerbed stopping anybody who can only dream of driving such cars in real life being really blunt about it, then it this is not going to end well insurance and values wise i don't think...Right now any kind of hero can get one on a PCP and drive away for 200 quid deposit...the writing is on the wall and Youtube what is to come with these insane, affordable, supercar performance, pocket rockets...

Youtube is awash with Mlite nobbers and showoffs, and Ebay and the net is festooned with second hand parts from obvious wreckers or stolen and Cat write off repaired cars...
