Alignment after swapping wheels normal?

Post by b1gdeano »

A couple of weeks ago I swapped my wheels over for a winter set and noticed that it felt like the alignment was out as would pull slightly to the left where it was ok before the swap.

Decided to get the alignment looked at this weekend and was surprised to find that the rears were out quite a bit on both toe and camber. The nearside front also had a very slight toe out, while the offside front was spot on

This got me thinking - is an alignment necessary each time I swap between my original wheels for summer and my winter set? I wouldn't have thought so, but the rears were out.

The original wheels were 7.5J x 18 ET45 225/40/18 front & 8J x 18 ET52 245/35/18 Rear

My winter set are square setup 7.5J x 17 ET43 225/45/17

So for those who downsize their wheels for winter - do you need to align each time? Or was this something that existed before but was masked by the bigger wheels?

No, swapping wheels nor tyres effects which directions/angles the hubs point in.

Unless of course you jacked the car up on suspension arms or something when doing wheel swap which of course would alter alignment if they bent!
