Just a further point to OP's excellent guide, with the pre-LCI M135i, I suggest the text be amended to read; either two pairs of 382 clear bulbs and one pair of 581 amber bulbs, or one pair of clear 382 bulbs, one pair of 382 red bulbs and one pair of 581 amber bulbs.

Perhaps a touch pedantic......
Any pre LCI pics with leds?

M135i / M140i Rear LED Install Guide (Updated)

Post by Hoss » Wed Sep 27, 2017 2:47 am

Here's a little guide for installing rear Twenty20 Cree LEDs to a pre-LCI M135i and the subtle differences with the post-LCI M135i and M140i. The guide supplements that originally posted by glen8.

Image
The pre-LCI M135i differs from other models in that it's only necessary to remove the 6mm nyloc nut (10mm socket), reach in with your hand above the nut to find the wavy plastic piece to pull out the tail light assembly.
Image
I suggest you mask around the tail light assembly to protect the paintwork as you will need to give the assembly a good tug and it will release with jerk.
Image
Use a cloth to block the gap under the nut to prevent it accidentally falling into the bumper cavity.
Image
Here's the assembly out of the car with the power still connected. There's a little clip at the top of the connector which you squeeze and the clip will release. Further down the power wire is a white plastic pin that locates the wire to the rear of the tail light assembly to prevent it flapping around inside the cavity. Make sure you press the pin into it's hole before installing the tail light assembly.
Image
The tail light assembly cavity showing the power wire, the white locating pin and the two locating pin holes for the assembly.
Image
Here's the rear of the tail light assembly. There are five grey tabs that hold the bulb holder to the tail light assembly. Carefully prise back the 5 tabs and separate the two assemblies.
Image
With the assemblies apart, you can see the three bulbs. Mine still has the OE amber bulb installed as it's a 581 type bulb, while the other two bulbs are type 382. The red and black wires on the right, middle of the housing is the power feed for the LED tail light.
Image
The new 581 bulb in its packaging from Autobulbsdirect. When buying LEDs for the pre-LCI M135i, it is essential that you specify the type 581 bulb in amber. The colour amber must be used as the tail light lens for the indicator is clear.
Image
Before installing the tail light assembly into the car, connect the power and see if everything works. All LEDs worked correctly and there were no error messages. Re-assembly into the car is the reverse of the removal process.

I'll put up some night pics when I have time. I hope the above is helpful.

Thanks again @glen8 for the guide, finally got round to doing the bulbs today as the Amber came back in stock. Such a simple but great transformation!

I think it should, although I haven't changed mine. I was also looking a the Phillips Silvervision bulbs for the front indicators. In the pre-LCI M135i, I suspect the bulbs will be the type 581 (offset locating pins). I suggest you remove an OE bulb to check the orientation of the locating pins in your car.
