THEY'VE DONE IT! - Custom tuning via OBD-II - NO DME UNLOCK REQUIRED

Hi all,

With the recent news the they've found a way to tune the F Series ECUs via OBD-II with no DME Unlock required, I thought it would be a great opportunity to made a video explaining all the various different approaches to increasing engine performance via Piggyback systems like JB4, and Custom Flash methods.

Think of this an all emcompassing guide to everything you should know before you choose how you'd like to go about tuning your car.

Details are scarce regarding this new flashing method, but what we know is it's done via OBD-II, and it doesn't require the ECU/DME to be removed front he car to be unlocked like previous methods required.

My guess is it will be a while before we see tuning suites developed for this new method, but this is BIG EXCITING NEWS for us all!

Yep. That's where I first heard the news! I've been speaking with a few experts in the industry today and it seems like there's already a few different solutions in the works using this same approach so hopefully there will be options available at local tuners all around the world before too long.

Shame there was no timescale given on the B58 engine, only "coming soon"

With all the drivetrain errors people are getting on B58 based cars any time they push them, I'm not sure tuning will ever work well with those cars :S

Considering that they are tied to limits imposed (e.g. fueling) on the car by the map that's a pretty daft statement.

Does the F-Series use the same DME as the >2012 135i? This could be good news for the post 2012 N55 guys.

My 2013 135i has the MEVD1726 DME & needs a bench flash to allow OBD flashing.

Yes the ECU from the N55 can be flashed via OBD with the new protocols that have become available in the last week or so :) All F-series and mini both petrol and diesel bar the x40i b58 Very exciting times for us tuners!! :fest:

So, I'm a little confuzled.

I emailed MHD Tuning a few days ago and got a positive reply saying that >2012 N55 direct flashing "we cannot confirm yet" but would 'probably' happen in January.

But, over on e90post.com, I got told "But the OBD2 Flashing/unlock without initial bench flashing is not going to happen".

So, direct flashing of N55s post 2012 seems pretty unlikely after all (at least with MHD).
