OBD port mapping question

Post by Andy225 » Sat Jun 23, 2018 12:13 pm

I’ve been in contact with Dervtech to map my 225D an they claim that they can flash the OBD port which will be undetectable by the finance company. Anyone had this done an encountered any issues or have any info on this being true?

Cheers

Being undetectable by the finance company is one thing. After all, I don't think they're in the habit of turning up and checking the vehicle over.

Being undetectable by the manufacturer is another thing altogether. I think the tuner is being economical with the truth.

All Remaps are detectable if you know what to look for full stop

If you look at the live reads and compare to a standard car you will see the difference
Also when you drive a well remapped car you can feel it's not standard and has a lot more torque

Turning off the tuning protection codes and a few more bits is possible when remapping the car which will stop the codes coming up on the diagnostics that flag the cars been tuned

I would say this is what they mean by not detectable

We explain this to customer's in more depth so they can understand that the remap can be found if looked for and advise customers that if they are worried about there warranty being voided then to wait till after it's out of warranty before remapping

This gets us less work but we are being honest with our customers and informing them correctly

I wouldnt worry about finance companies and manufacturers; its the old Bill and any insurance company come an accident thats worth worrying about, and I guareantee they'll be able to detect a remap, however its applied (unless you have the ability to remove it between an accident and an inspection, or have already declared it on insurance (in which case they should ask if the owner is aware of the modification)).

Doubtless Jason from BWChiptune will be along soon to comment on OBD port flashing. Not my area of expertise.

Agree, the tuner is being economical with the truth. So many dodgy geezers out there. Be careful.

Edit: So Jason got there before I submitted, predictable!

So if I was to get the remap but put the car back to standard figures before a service do you think that would be fine?

Depends on what your concern is.

When it comes to servicing the manufacturer couldn't care less.

If you make a warranty claim because the engine threw a piston through the block then they'll care. If you crash it your insurer will care as they'll find any excuse not to pay out.

If the car is under warranty from new they will care about it and if found they will put a flag up on the bmw system saying warranty is void on all drive line

How do I know as I've had loads of cars that have been tuned by other tuners that told the customer it can't be detected or they damaged the ecu opening it then told the customer to go to bmw for a software update only for the customer to be told there car ecu software has been tampered with and now there drive line warranty is void

The customers have came to me to put the car right or repair there damaged ecu

If a tuner says there tuning can't be detected ask them to put it in to writing that if bmw do find it they will pay bmw any of the costs that's needed or buy you a new car

Then see what they say then
