BMW Buying Advice

Post by JasonCB » Thu May 16, 2019 8:50 pm

Hi there, in the next few months i will be looking to buying a BMW as a first car.
I am looking at a 2015 118d M Sport.
I am just wondering if there is anything i should know before buying this car? such as any common issues, must-have modifications.
Car will be on HP so i'm free to do whatever i want to it really but im not wanting to do any engine mods besides re-mapping the ECU.

Thanks.

Make sure it's a facelift model with the later B47 engine.

Please help the Mod's by using the report [ ! ] button where appropriate

Any particular reason you want a diesel? As Marco says the 2015 facelift introduced the new B47 engine replacing the previous, much maligned, N47.

I want a diesel as better fuel economy and has more torque so would be better for motorway racing versus my friends if they aren't too pussy to do it.
I thought the 118d m sport only came with a n47 making 150hp?

This is the car i am looking at getting, pretty sure this is LCI as the front bumper and whole styling off the car is different to that of a pre-lci 2015 118d m sport

I think the N47 118d was rated at 141bhp but may be wrong. Get the cars VIN off the seller and use an online VIN Checker. That will confirm the engine as well as the options it left the factory with.

First car + BMW + remap = heavy insurance premium. Include the 'motorway racing' you state in that equation = either killing yourself/somebody else/loss of licence due to being caught by unmarked S3.

May sound harsh but go for a 114i.

Nah i won't be a dickhead driver though, light motorway pulls aren't dangerous compared to street racing with sh*t fiesta's.

Plus £2k insurance isn't bad and i won't be tuning until about my 3rd potential 4th year of owning.

Looks a nice motor
Mate. Pretty sure it wont be the n47 as it changed prior to 15 plates. Looks to have nice spec like pro screen and extended dash display. I would look at the autos too. Bit harder to find but having just got my first bmw, a 15 plate LCI 118i petrol, the gearbox isnt brilliant. My golf was much smoother so when i next change ill be going for the auto.

Ha. I can see why our insurance premiums go up with each generation turning 17.

B47 been in the 118d since 2015 with around 148bhp 150PS. Model you linked above is B47 based on mycarcheck.

Yeh im wanting a manual as first car due to learning with a manual, probably go for an auto on more powerful cars in the future.

That's good then, few more horsepower and a better engine overall.

Dont forget to use vcheck.uk to make sure anything you buy isnt an insurance write-off that has gone unrecorded and not picked up by the usual HPI checks https://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic ... 1&t=116085
