No Air con and 2 coolant tank confusion

Post by Jonny96 »

M140i 2018

First of all apologies, I realise this has been covered in previous threads.

During the wind last weekend a branch hit my lower grille smashing it and denting the lower radiator.

Thought I’d got away with it after a quick grille replacement. Next week car making odd noises when idling which turned out to be the air con clutch cutting in and out.... plus no air con!

Dealer said I’ve damaged the lower radiator which they say is the air con condenser. They said it’s safe to drive and I’m getting a new condenser fitted at a mates BMW shop with genuine parts as dealers Labour price is mental.

Now here’s where I get confused, the Vehicle health check they sent though says ‘High and low pressure coolant levels low’ and the air con is fine (which it isn’t). I’ve checked both the coolant tanks and the larger one is on max, the smaller tank is empty!

Rang the dealer and they also seem confused about the B58 coolant tanks, still waiting to hear from them.

So all I want to know is what are the large and small tanks? And is it safe to drive? I have no warnings on dash, only thing not working is the AC.

Thanks

One is the waterjacket for the block, the other is charge-cooler and AC.

I wouldn't be driving it hard/far. If you have to, chewing gum/Bluetak in the hole, demineralised water 50:50 G48 coolant in the tank. Might be able to limp a few miles without destroying anything?

Don’t drive it.

You’ll be running the electric pump dry, which will destroy it.

Should the car not be showing a warning on the dash?

Nope. They're not that clever.

It'd warn if the engine coolant was low, I'd have thought the same for the charge coolant.

No warning lights on dash, it’s booked in for a weeks time to get a new condenser rad fitted and I’m not driving it between then and now. I’ll fill it up before I leave and take it easy on the 20 minute drive to the workshop.

Amazing how there’s hardly any info about these coolant tanks. Even the dealer was confused when I mentioned the smaller tank.

Now to think about some mesh..... 🤔
