End of 135i PCP approaching - 116i F2x replacement?

Post by tallstevef »

Hi All,

Well, after 20 odd months of pretty flawless motoring I'm approaching the end of my 24m PCP deal on the 135i. Aside from a few minor things (documented on here) it's been a great car, but circumstances have changed somewhat and so I'm needing to consider something a bit more... Sensible...

Have had a look / test drive of a new 5dr 116i sport - which was pretty good I thought. Yes, it wasn't as quick as the '35 but it was brisk enough and had some nice toys with the dash mounted info system and parking sensors. Plus the much better fuel economy would be welcome!

Was wondering if there was a big/noticable performance jump between the 116i and 118i? As I understand it's the same engine but in a different state of tune?

Was thinking of either another PCP deal on a new or (Low mileage / AUC) used 116/8i - any good deals out there that people know of / people to speak to?

Many thanks,

Steven

Not sure what the fuel economy on your m135i was, but with my auto 116i I was only getting 35

The average of my 116i manual won't budge from 38.4. It's nearly at 10k now but has been that since about 6k. I have managed 55mpg on a constant 60mph run though.

Don't suppose you fancy a swap? ;)

Mine's not an m135i, it's the old shape coupe with the N54 engine - On the OBC it shows at around 27/28 mpg for off-peak around town driving. I've got high 30's (maybe even 40!) on a run, sitting in 6th at 60-65mph. I suspect the 116/118 petrol can easily better that!

As far as swaps go, I'm not sure! I'll have about 7k to pay off in Feb to own the car, and have been given a PX figure of around 10k when I went for the test drive. Not sure how much it would be worth as a private sale though, not too many around on Autotrader with the same spec / miles - although the ones that I can see seem to have held their value well...

I'd think you'd fetch around £12k+ for the car selling private dependant on condition, FSH etc. 135i coupes are sought after IMO seeing as its the N54 and much cheaper than the current 235i's.

By being "sensible", I assume you need an extra couple of doors? Can you stretch towards an m135i? No sacrifice in speed but equal practicality that you seek?

Make sure you have a test drive of it before buying the next car as it'll be more costly to change this time next year if you have regrets. Have fun car searching! :)

On average my m135 is only 3mpg less economical than my f20 116i was.

Interesting... Mine is just over 61k miles, good condition, FBMWSH so maybe buying at the end of PCP and then selling could get me a few more £££ than taking the px value from the dealers...

Spot on about more doors needed, have "inherited" a family (other half has a teenager) and it can be a pain getting in and out.

Did try the M135i when it came out and was very impressed. Would love one but new home purchase has dented finances! Hence thinking smaller engines and running costs - although saying that I only do 5-6k miles a year!!

5-6K?! So driving a 116i will save you around £6 per week in fuel vs an M135i?

Why not look at a 3 series? I bet a 320i wouldn't be much more a month

my 2p worth, get the m135i if you can, as stated the difference in £ for petrol is nothing if u are doing 5/6000 miles per year, you will miss the six pot, i went from my 135i to a jcw but was back in a bmw 6 after a year, you cant beat it

Remember you don't have to wait to the end of the contract to buy, you can always try and sell or px now you will owe more, but px or resale my be far better. Plus may better deals on now than in 4 months.

Fuel aside, remember there is likely to be a significant difference in the insurance and PCP payments between a 116i and a M135i. If the OPs circumstances have changed he may not want the additional costs.

I don't know if he is looking at auto or manual, but in addition to the extra bhp, in manual form the 118 is geared differently to improve acceleration at the cost of higher revs and reduced fuel consumption. I would be getting a decent test drive of both before deciding, but I think it's fair to say the price difference between 116&118 is such that the benefits of the 118i don't fully stack up.

There's not a lont of difference between the 116i and 118i in the mid range but at around 4500rpm and above the 116i feels as though it's holding back where the 118i keeps pulling.

116i Auto owners tend to get better economy than manual owners on here. On my 30 mile commute with 18 miles of motorway I average 50mpg in summer dropping to around 45mpg mid winter. Around town is mid 30's. Those figures are mirrored by other auto owners on here.

Why not just get a bank loan to pay off your balloon. Payments will probably be the same as a new 116i, only you will own the car once your loan is paid off...

In terms of the insurance you might be surprised. My insurance costs went down by £10 per year when I swapped from a 6 year old 320d to a brand new M135i. I was expecting to pay at least £100 more.
