Ring Doorbell

Post by Octavius » Sun Jan 06, 2019 12:36 pm

Anyone got one of the Ring doorbells with the Wi-fi video.
Thinking of getting one for each door but I was wondering what the quality is like and if there’s any known problems with them.

Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure you need to have the app active all the time for updates so can be data hungry.

I have a Ring Doorbell 2 for my front door, a Ring Spotlight for my back garden and front garden.

The quality is very good with clear pictures.

The App does not need to be continually open. It's the same as any other App where it sends you a notification from movement and/or a Ring of the door bell.

Worth getting in my book.

Was looking at the Ring spotlight, can you choose cloud provide or local SAN for storage?

Nest get decent reviews.

Shame Wi-Fi only... would prefer CAT5/6 wired option as before we know it, little b**tards will be blocking wireless etc.

Easier to cut the phone line than block Wi-fi

Very true, my router has 4G backup option, which I’m planning on setting up in the not too distant future.

I was looking into them and saw mixed reviews.

A big complaint seems to be the reaction time when someone presses the button. People often say they don't get the notification for over a minute, by which time the person ringing the doorbell has decided no-ones home and buggered off, which sort of defeats the purpose of a door bell.

I decided against one, although that said, a mate used one with an Alexa Spot device (the one with the little display) and says it's great as it comes through no problem, so who knows?

I considered them but not sure how you convincingly answer saying you are in the bath with the supermarket tannoy announcing spillage in isle 3?

If you want a security camera I would suggest Nest Outdoor Camera. I have both this, and the ring doorbell 2. Nest has far superior image quality over ring doorbell. Both are 1080p but think Nest uses better quality lens plus glass outer rather than (Ring) plastic.

Response times for alerts can vary on both but usually max time is around 10secs from motion detect.

Also ring doorbell battery depletes quickly if lots of motion is expected, ie on street, whereas Nest is hard wired.

Both require a subscription to store video footage for any time other than real time viewing so bear that in mind.

I've got a ring Pro that I use which was a replacement for a Hikvision doorbell I had

Easy to install and set up, I did have some initial connection issues but I got myself a chime Pro and that helped a lot

Day time picture is very good and notifications are great nice and accurate

Night time is not bad but could be better I guess that's the same for most of the manufacturers on the market but I can still see a clear picture of anyone who may come

I’ve got the ring doorbell 2

I like the idea of it... but even with the signal booster door bell chime and the router being fairly close to the front door, when someone presses the bell it still takes 30-50 seconds for it to ring on the chime and for our phones to tell us. By which time the postman has usually gone....

We use it more these days as an extra cctv camera rather than a door bell tbh
