Does this car belong to anyone here?

Confession time. Who were was it and does your car have JB+? :D

“West team conducting speed checks #A47 Terrington St John & are shocked at some of the speeds they have seen.

In a short period they had reported 6 drivers travelling at 103mph, 2 at 105mph,114mph, 127mph & 146mph. Unbelievable”

Glass houses and all that, I've done silly speeds before. Been over 140mph on a road in my time although the last 2 occasions I did that were both emergency and/or life/death situations involving deaths and poorly children.

It all depends on the road, conditions and traffic.

Whilst the Police may say it's "stupid" doing 146mph, if it's dry on a dual carriageway/motorway with no other traffic then where is the harm? The German gov't don't seem to mind on the autobahns (for now!!). If it's rush hour, wet and busy then certainly a no-no.

It's about time we upped the limits in this country and stop fannying about with limits that were set when cars had drum brakes.

To me speeding in towns and villages/built up areas is way worse than on motorways.

I fancy a bit of devils advocate as well .........

While this is obviously rather stupid, if the road was empty with no junctions how is it different from doing 140mph on a track? As Onetwenty points out its OK to do it in Germany as well.

Fair enough, its against the law and he should certainly be prosecuted but its hardly crime of the century.

When cars had drum brakes, there was no max limit. I think the 70 limit was introduced mid 60s when Aston Martins and E-Type Jags were on crossply tyres both capable of around 150.

I've done 70 through the back streets of Purley before now in the days when the limit was 30. :spotman: It was when following a police car who was escorting me to a hospital very early on a Sunday morning - that blue light is not good to follow.

Problem was, I was on practically bald hand cut slicks (Dunlop A2s) after a snowy/icy road rally - superb fun it was - and was hoping they didn't hang around afterwards.

I've done the Police escort thing before, can't remember why now but I remember how brilliant it was following the cops at speed!!

Upgrade the limits yes, but not sure about unrestricted? Presumably most Germans have experience of high speed driving and the road infrastructure to allow it? I wouldn't trust 80% of the drivers I see at 70mph on an arrow straight road in the uk!

5am on an empty M1 I regularly see peanuts sitting in the middle lane at 68mph, so many drivers with poor lane discipline and awareness is scary when closing at 80, let alone 150.

You are right about more focus on town/ residential speeds.

Agreed.

I think what they should do is variable limits based on conditions, time etc. If it's 3am, dry weather and the roads are empty I see no issue in having the motorway limit at 120 or 140mph to help people get to places quicker.

Reduce that to 100 when it gets a bit busier, 70 when wet/bad weather and then lower as they do now when its congested at 50/60 which actually helps the traffic.

This blanket setting of 70mph is just daft these days. I regularly boot my car and look down to see I'm doing 120 in seconds, it's so easy in todays cars.

I shudder at the thought of half the idiots we have on the roads allowed to go too fast. The driving standard is too low and far too many people don't take good enough care of their car.

Too many people drive under the influence and can't last 10 minutes without having to check their phones.

I believe that the German driving test is significantly harder than ours and requires lots of tutoring. Their equivalent of the MOT test is also much tougher.

I read that most of the part worn tyres in this country are the ones that have been binned in Germany. They appear to keep far better care of their cars and pay attention to safety matters.

The accident rates on the Autobahns is higher than roads with limits in Germany. Going faster will mean more accidents.

Germany have been talking about applying speed limits on safety grounds for a while. Now the other aspect is on the emissions front where they think pollution will be decreased if they apply a limit.

The roads are also much busier than they were in the past. Is there actually that many of the motorways that could genuinely support an unlimited limit?

Brake did tests that found that the highway code underestimates stopping distances. The highway code allows for 0.67sec reaction time, but they say the real reaction time is 1.5 seconds. All stopping distances were exceeded by a large percentage due to reaction times being poor.

Amen to that. I'd never forgive myself if a child stepped into the road and I clipped and hurt them in a built up area. Regardless of the noise the car makes and how fast I go on the B roads leading up to a built up area, no amount of tail-gaiting and pushing will lead me to break the 30.
