Re: Top Gear - your dad's car
I feel so young
3rd generation run out Prelude, lowered 40-50mm properly and some ridiculously wide alloys(for the time). Loved that car.

Re: Top Gear - your dad's car
Yes sir!
We also had a 1.3 metro van, which was just as quick as my MG as it was totally stripped down with no rear seats, no radio etc.

Re: Top Gear - your dad's car
My dad always bought british,I have fond memories of his lagoon blue morris marina tc,we got from our home in kirkoswald(in cumbria) to morecambe in forty minutes, this was in 1974,so it was a pretty rapid machine in those days
Re: Top Gear - your dad's car
Have to say my dad had some pretty cool cars in the 80’s when I was growing up, all Fords. From memory and not necessarily in the correct order he had
Capri 3.0
Escort XR3
Capri 2.8
Fiesta XR2
Capri 2.8
Capri 2.8
Sierra XR 4x4
Capri 280 Brooklands
Sierra XR 4x4 Estate
Orion 1.6i Ghia
He loved his Capris as you can tell, pretty sure he had at least 5, maybe more. Most of them got stolen including the Brooklands. When he got a little older he always had boring cars, though he still has an original 1969 Mini Cooper S....and a cracking E91 335d which we’ve just sold to him. I doubt an oil burner will ever become a classic mind

Re: Top Gear - your dad's car
I always remember thinkng "wow 2.8, that's a big engine" at the time (though i knew very little about what cars were on sale in my late teens/early 20's). My only other memory is of the press saying how the Capri was good as long as you only ever wanted to drive in a straight line. I didn't really have any sense of what that meant at the time eitherracey1979 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 10:58 pm Have to say my dad had some pretty cool cars in the 80’s when I was growing up, all Fords. Haha, yeah I don't think they were ever great handling cars, fairly sure they had leaf springs on the back ? I remember my dad insuring me on his XR 4x4 estate when I was 18, I used to drive around with all my mates thinking it was a rocket shipCoupeSilver wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 10:01 am I always remember thinkng "wow 2.8, that's a big engine" at the time (though i knew very little about what cars were on sale in my late teens/early 20's). Re: Top Gear - your dad's car
My first car was a K reg AX GTI which I eventually shoehorned a Saxo VTS engine into, it was a little rocket at the time and embarrassed a lot of fast cars. I still have nightmares of the money that cost me as a kid and how lucky I am to be alive the way I drove it

Indeed - mine was a weapon. I literally thrashed the arse off it every time I drove it.
Learned a lot whilst I owned it though, managed to put new drive shafts on it, wired new stereos and speakers.
Fitted new bumper and headlight - don’t ask me what happened, you can guess.

Good old days - I think petrol was about 65p and if you shopped in Safeway’s you got a 5p per litre discount.
Nicked from google but mine looked identical to this:
