BBQ Charcoal

Post by Sam1er »

Hi all.
So its that time of year to get the bbq's back out and i need to stock up on charcoal.
Last year i bought 4 x 4KG bags of Heatbeads and they were great, lasted a long while and didnt burn out too quick but they are quite expensive.
I dont mind buying the same again, but wanted to see what others are using be it charcoal or lumpwood or briquettes.

Thanks

I've been using Big K lumpwood mainly, ACH15, but it's hit and miss with regards to the piece sizes - probably due to transit.
Seems to burn for a good amount of time and has a decent heat output, one of the bags from my latest order burned out very quickly, to the point where I opened the other bag which was fine. I'll save the fast burning stuff for grilling burgers or something rather than longer cooks / smokes.

Think I'll give Globaltic a shot next.

Someone else told me about big k aswell. They seem to have a couple different types and some coconut shell ones aswell that sound interesting. Il give them a look. Worth buying a bag to try :)

Not heard of Globaltic before, il have a look. Cheers :D

If you order direct from Big K there is usually a discount code kicking about on one of the Facebook groups.

i've always just used whatever generic stuff places like B&Q or Homebase sell, but i avoid the briquete stuff and go for the proper charcoal. I've always found the briquetes to burn too quickly and I'm sure some of them have an impregnated accelerant which taints the taste of the food.

I always cook straight on wood if I'm out in the forest, unbeatable flavour. Beech or Pine. I roast on a greenwood spit positioned just above white coals. No food will ever taste as good.

I have to say, I can taste briquettes. There's just something about them I don't like. The food tastes weird to me, I don't know.

My actual BBQ is gas and pumice stones. Nice and easy and food tastes fine.

I'd recommend the Weber briquettes. Much better than Bar-Be-Quick which burns too quickly.
