Speed Camera Flash

Evening All,

In a bit of a panic right now, I was flashed this morning (about 9am) going south-bound on the M1 between Junction 8-7 (Hemel Hempstead if anyone knows) by a speed camera mounted to the left of the overhead signs. There was no overhead speed limits however i was doing roughly 90mph or so (I was running late for a lecture - no excuse I know) and I have sped past this camera before however I've never been flashed, been driving past this specific camera nearly every day for the last year or so.

My question is, does anyone know what the fine/penalty points is for speeding like this? I'm presuming the limit was 70 as no limit was displayed but I'm worrying more as it hasn't been 2 years since I've passed and 6 points means disqualification! Praying to God that its 3 points and a fine, or they don't send the NIP within the 14 day limit.

Any help is duly appreciated :)

Fingers crossed you get nothing at all.

If it's recorded at 'just' 90, that squeaks into a Band A offence (At 91mph it steps up to Band B).

Could be a £90 National speed awareness course, or 3 points and a £100 (minimum) fine.

90 or so ?
Could be 83 to 90 as the Speedo’s always read higher.
I was talking to a chap on a speed awareness course I attended a few years back and he had been caught at 86 on the motorway.

I hope you get off lightly.

I've read somewhere that the limit for 3 points & £100 fine is 95mph? Is this true or just internet waffle? Thank you both for the kind words :)

At 95 you'd be looking at 4 - 6 Points. :(

90 on the motorway... you're about to get reamed. 6 points and 150% of weekly wages

Umm....doing 90 past a speed camera that you know is there and that you’ve passed before whilst speeding.....

Your own fault (as you admit), but it is repeat offenders that need teaching a lesson, unfortunately your luck might have run out.

I got done for speeding (so i’m not perfect) and when I was whinging to another person about it, they said I might have been caught on that occasion, but think how many times I had got away with it! Sounds like the same applies to you.

I hope you don’t get banned etc, and obviously I hope you learn from it and slow down (90 past a speed camera is asking for trouble), whatever the punishment is, perhaps a speed awareness course would be more useful - ie education.

I'll try not to preach, just highlight that those camera's are set to flash at speeds of 80mph and above.

Generally it's an unwritten rule that speeds up to 80mph on the motorway (as long as you're not driving like a plonker) wont attract the old bill or set off camera's, so worth remembering when you're next 'in a rush'.

Also have a think about what you actually gain. How long was the journey, would travelling 10 miles an hour extra actually make a difference?

It sounds like it would, but even if you were travelling 50 miles say, you only arrive approx. 4 minutes quicker doing 90 instead of 80, then you're in normal local traffic where the difference may even get eaten up a little. If you have even less distance to travel then you really are talking a couple of minutes difference in the arrival time.

Is that really worth losing your licence over?

Anyway, all you can do is wait to see if anything comes through now and hope for the best. If you were doing an indicated 90 then you were more likely doing mid-80's in terms of real speed, so at least fall into the lower catergory than the 90-100.

A, B and C categories only apply if you are to appear in court iirc.
From my speed awareness course last year I was told that they (courses) only applied up to +10mph.
So, if I understand correctly, you should get a NIP stating 3 points and £100 fine?

An inexperienced driver using excessive speed when in a rush on a regular basis. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I think you're outside of the speed awareness course as I believe the most you can get caught at is 86mph and get offered it so you might just get the offer for it?

Good luck.

Please don't spread false information.

These penalties only come into effect if the OP has a serial speeding record which leads to a court appearance or decides to contest the NIP.

IF anything comes through it'll likely be 3 points.

For the record I got flashed twice on the same road over xmas (see my recent thread) which lead to a horrible end to my xmas holiday. I didn't receive anything for either...

So you noticed getting flashed the first time, and then did it again
