Metallics are a different paint you don't tend to get the same paint defects because they are laquered too unllike the primary colour paints mines white it's nice n shiny after a machine polish and 3 coats of wax but the over all quality is pretty woeful for a 30k car as were the others i scoped out...

Chelly, Just wanted to clarify, is your car brand new?

I thought the orange peel paint was an optional extra to help it slide through the air with reduced air resistance like a golf ball.

Not had any issues with my 240 and the quality is up there with anything else I've owned in the past, and much better than any Ford, Honda etc I've owned before.

Maybe you just got a lemon, it happens.

Mine is a 3 year old M135i. I am pretty impressed with the build quality having come from a Golf Gti (and VW are usually complemented on their build quality). Paint is good - not perfect but not noticeably orange-peel. I think we have to accept. These are mass produced cars. If you want flawless paintwork you would need to spend £££££. Saw a documentary on them recreating the racing E-type jags. Each one of those they sold for £1m. The paint job was costed at £100,000. Hundreds of hours - painting, flattening, polishing .. repeat.

Hopefully this will be the last trim issue. Just doesn't fill me with confidence overall though given the collection of issues. It's built to a cost, unfortunately seems to be a general trend these days.

I think he might've bought it brand new, don't you? :-)

Sounds like a bit of a Friday afternoon car unfortunately.

So far after 12 months of ownership my 140 is still pretty solid with no issues at all like this (fingers crossed).

As above, coming from a Ford everything is much better bolted together and rattles are none existent compared to that, which had cheap plastic trim rattles quite quickly.

No rattles or shakes on mine. I thought the F20 had decent build quality compared to older E series cars, its on par with 3/4 F series but not quite up there with the 5 Series. Previous car was a GT86, that thing rattled, more then my Elise.

My 140i is booked in with bmw next week to sort the following:

1) Rattling speedo surround
2) Creaking window seals and wind noise
3) Boot lid knocking on rough surface/bumps
4) Creaking coming from somewhere next to the driver whenever turning right around a bend

I’ve had three of those problems:

2) Common problem it seems, especially in warm weather. Applied GT85 spray to felt seal at top of door (worked for a few weeks). Recently applied Krytox, supposed to a more permanent fix.

3) Rotated boot lid stops anti-clockwise 3 or 4 turns and this held boot lid tighter. Also applied felt tape to catch on one side of split folding rear seat as seat was loose when engaged.

4) Had same symptom under drivers seat. Liberal spray of white lithium grease to seat rail solved it immediately.

Mine is just over a year old and it’s been ok.
MPE fitted to ‘fix’ rattling exhaust valve but I get a bit of resonance and drone plus one of the tips has gone yellow already.. Sounds so much better when ‘on it’ but the rest of the time I find it mildly irritating. First and last time I ever ‘mod’ a car!
iDrive had to be completely replaced including new screen as it wouldn’t turn on at all.
Paint peeling from inside the front arches so they simply scraped it off and said those bits shouldn’t have been painted in the first place?!
Gearbox bangs and pings occasionally during low speed manoeuvres but not gone in about this yet as it seems to work fine at the minute...
Overall it’s a nice car but I’m already frustrated at not being able to use the (excessive, for me at least!) performance often and trying not to worry about where I park it as well as the fact it doesn’t feel built to last means I will change it once it’s not too financially painful to do so!
Previously - E87 118d M Sport in sapphire black
Current - F20 M140i SE in alpine white
