Have BMW actually said a new Mx40i will not be the new version of the B58 ? The engine is in the new 340i and I remember loads of threads where people said the Mx35i was the last of the straight six ... then low and behold, shock horror, the Mx40i !!

Yes, there is a 2L 130i but that doesn't mean there won't be the 6 cylinder in a new Mx40i ... especially as they have brought the M2 CP out too ... albeit that is the M3/4 engine detuned.

I think they will expand the range but the new Mx40i will be 4wd and have the straight 6 like the new M340i is getting. Just my opinion FWIW unless someone at BMW has said the 6 cyl is not going in the new 1/2 series ?? Free to be corrected.
It's based on a Mini platform so no north south straight 6 engine because they physically won't fit.

There has been *lots* of press confirming this for months.

The next 2 series coupe is being built on a different platform (same as the new 3 series IIRC) but is some way away.

100% confirmed, it's going to be a PoS 4 Pot banger, B58 won't fit in sideways nor lengthways into the new tiny engine bay.

The one I'm interested in is the new CLAR 2er GranCoupe - in M-performance spec that could be a winner.
I wouldn't hold your breath for it as it seems like the GC variant is going to be based on the FWD chassis like the 2 series Active Tourer and the new 1 Series, not the RWD CLAR platform like the proper coupe.

Not sold on that - it could still be RWD/4WD platform...

Very likely to be a transverse FWD with that high bonnet line and front overhang

Image

Edit: compare that to the new 3 series which the 2 Series coupe will be based on

Echoing the chorus of negative feedback, which BMW will of course ignore, there is nothing to look forward to here. I’m damned if I’m swapping the gloriously tuneful (and highly efficient) 6 for a droney 4 pot and right wheel drive for the dreaded Haldex. If you want those things, just buy a Golf R, which will look better.

My next car will have to be up a size to get a proper BMW powertrain (3 series touring or the new 2 Gran Coupe), so BMW get even more of my money

That is the 2 Grand Coupe above, so 3 Series and above only for inline RWD platform unless you can squeeze into a regular 2 Series Coupe.

Yes pretty sure the 2 series GC will be transverse FWD. Look at the front callipers.

Agree that the monstrosity pictured about has to be a front driver, given the bulbous front end. I was referring to other recent reports (eg Autocar) of an M2 Gran Coupe, on a longitudinal, RWD platform (CLAR?).

definitely traverse

look how back the front wheels are - like typical audi/Merc a3 and A class which then have very curved front bumpers to hide how back the front wheel are

the pic against the 3 series shows that perfectly

for me the current 135 and 140 dont handle that well so why people are getting all worked over driving dynamics is beyond me - i think AWD will be perfect if the chassis and steering is anything to go by

my A3 diesel pool car(still not ordered a replacement car yet) is more fun to drive in a sure footed way than our sketchy 135

Yeh I saw that article mentioned on Pistonheads, looked like there were loads of holes in the story though such as an M2GC using the old N55 based M2 engine when that got ditched from the existing M2 due to not meeting new emissions standards. That and the fact the rest of the 2 Series GC range will be FWD/4WD on the Mini platform, I can't see BMW making a one-off 4 door 2 series shell just for an M2GC.

I see your logic, but hope you’re wrong!
