Safe ET for Bilstein B16 damper and 18 x 8.5J wheels

Post by MSM »

Hi All,

Has anyone here paired Bilstein B16 struts with an 18 x 8.5J front wheel on an F2x?

If so, were there any issues with damper to wheel/tyre clearance, and what offset ET and tyre size was used?

Thanks,

B16, 8J x 18 et40 here.

Good clearance to strut with 245 section tyre. Could probably go 3mm inboard and 10mm outboard. So something like an 8.5J x 35 would be about right.

ACS use 8.5" et43mm all round on their cars incl those fitted with ACS RS c/overs aka rebadged KW V3.

8.5" et 40mm all round should be fine too.

I don't have B16's, but I'd suggest somewhere around ET38 (as you wouldn't want to stray too far from the factory Scrub Radius). Expect to need an arch roll if fitting 245's.

Are these B16 sets any wider / larger than stock then?
I’m running 19” wheels very close to stock dampers at the front at least and have been considering B16.

My B14 seem identical in diameter to the OEM adjustable dampers that came off the car, I couldn't see any change in clearance between wheel and damper body.
I'd assume aftermarket suppliers would want to keep as close as possible to the OEM dimensions to avoid fitment issues, certainly where the lower part of the damper body clamps into the wheel hub/upright.

Hi Nisfan, BP and Marco,

Thank you for the input guys, much appreciated. :) I have ordered a set of 18 x 8.5 wheels at ET40/ET45 and I expect to be rolling the arches sometime. (Went ET45 on the rear to keep the option for a 255 tyre open and avoid the Carlos Fandango style look if I stick with 245 at the back :)).

I checked the damper mid-body diameter, and the OE and B16 damper bodies are the same diameters. This suggests that the wheel clearance will be the same as for an OE damper. Should bode well for RMB123d.

Again, much thanks for the info, it was a huge help on the decision. :)

I ran 8.5” et47mm on the back of my m135i - plenty of room for 255/35/18 tyre. In fact SootyVRS ran 9” et50mm with 265/35/18 tyre wo any issues.

I run et41 on my 18 and 19 8.5j front. Both sets fit fine regardless of if I'm running -2 or -3 degrees camber. Rear I use 9.5j at et50 in 18 and et49 19.
