Does this fix cover M135i’s as well as M140i’s?
If it’s the same actuator system then we can only presume so. The issue could potentially be huge!

Had our M140 a month, and had a couple of intermittent rattles from cold. Car went in the dealers yesterday, they couldn't find anything, but said they'd contact BMW as it was a known issue. MPE authorised this morning without asking for it..did enquire as to whether we could upgrade to Carbon tips (ours is a shadow edt, so I think carbon would look more OEM) but they wanted £350 + vat....standard MPE it is then

Does anyone know if the 340i suffers the same issue?

Mine was in the dealers today for this. I mentioned free MPE’s, to which the service guy laughed a bit. Told him about the latest ‘intel’ from this thread - a replacement part due soon, which he a seemed to agree with after he’d done a bit of investigating. He wants a video for evidence and we’ll go from there, which is fine by me.

Mine’s a M135i but other than that, why the disparity!?

Probably a dealer thing - and the fact that it's a different exhaust configuration altogether between the N55 and B58.

You're there to get the issue repaired, not to come out of the situation better off - so I wouldn't complain unless they were refusing to fix it.

Some dealers may have had people coming in with a rattle and instantly demanding they want an MPE, obviously seeing the rattle as a chance to get a free exhaust upgrade which to be honest would p*ss me off too if I was in their position.

If there's no other solution and one is offered then that's one thing, going in and demanding a MPE immediately is another. I guess if they've had this happen, they will be defensive. Best way to approach them is to show the rattle evidence and ask for a solution. It's up to them how they deal with it.

^^ agreed.

We had our car booked in for two days, so they'd have it from cold to try and replicate the noise. We never mentioned anything about an MPE (despite knowing about them) Our dealer admitted it was a known issue, and they'd contact BMW on our behalf for suggestions to a fix - just simply said the car is only a month old, and its slightly annoying, can it be looked into..

That said, our dealer is fully aware why we P/X'd our Abarth with them to get the 140.. rattling exhaust with seized valves (replaced three times by Abarth) so maybe they felt a little sorry for me

I think if I'd have gone in and said its got an intermittent rattle, I want a free MPE they would have told me to do one

All valid points guys. But just to be clear at no point did I demand or even ask for an MPE.

I told the service advisor that my exhaust valve rattles, some people have been getting MPE replacements but rumour has it there's a fix coming soon (as indicated recently in this thread) and I left him with it for the day. That's all.

I've managed to record it this morning on video so I'll be forwarding that on. I'll report back when I get an update.

With regards to the disparity, I just feel as this is a known issue all cases should be handled in the same way. As in, BMW UK's approach is fault X = solution Y and that's that. Although I do appreciate there are differences in the exhaust systems between the MX35i's and MX40i's, specifically the latter having a valveless MPE as I understand it, so perhaps it's not fair to directly compare cases.

Interested to see what my service man comes back with.

Fair enough. Your initial post was worded a little more ambiguously, so it wasn't clear what made the technician laugh. But it now appears your approach wasn't unreasonable.

Good luck with it. I understand your frustration about what should be a consistent fix for a known and very prevalent issue.

He laughed at the notion of free MPE’s as a fix for the fault.

Emailed the video Saturday morning. Just called now to check he’d received it. Received but not watched as yet. I said that’s fine, was just checking it’d come through okay.

He did use phrases like “pass it up the line” and “see what they want us to do”.

I asked when I might expect an update, couple of days? He thinks more like a couple of weeks. Seems like he wants to drag his heels a little... :chin:

As one of the minority who doesn’t want the MPE as a fix I have taken the decision ( painful as I love my car ) to reject my car. This is due my mostly motorway commute and really not wanting a louder and less subtle exhaust. BMW financial services have said this isn’t a reason for rejection as it is not a manufacturing fault..... I beg to differ as a car / exhaust isn’t produced to rattle from day one. I would also argue that if you have already replaced my exhaust with a brand new standard one after one week , why did you do that if it’s acceptable?? And why are you now falling over yourselves to get me to accept an MPE as a fix..... if it isn’t broken then why is there a need to fix it?! Very frustrating and disappointing to say the least.

Can anyone confirm that when they got the I-stage software upgrade the rattle still existed? Or did it disappear for a while and then return?

After BMW cleaning the stones out of my exhaust, it sounds different. the nearside exhaust purrs - I video'd and slowed it and funny enough - it sounds like a rattle. Could just be me being paranoid as all my settings and driver profile have gone and the exhaust sounds like it is blowing harder. Please note, my dealer said they only removed stones and didn't say they did anything else.
