NEW TYRES - MPSS or PS4

Post by M240iJB+ » Wed Jan 10, 2018 11:51 am

My rears are coming to the end of their life after 17k miles on my Mlite. Noticed there is now the option of Michelin PS4 instead of the Pilot Super Sports, they also seem to be slightly cheaper and easier to get hold of - Does anyone have any experience of these on a 140/240?

The only other tire I have considered is the Goodyear Eagle F1 which seem to be highly regarded although not sure of the position regarding a PCP/resale and changing tyre brand/type.

Finally can anyone confirm if the PS4 actually replaces the MPSS... Don't want to left unable to source MPSS when the fronts need doing either.

Thanks in advance!

I think the actual mpss replacement is called PS4s the final s could be important seen some mixed reviews about the PS4 with no ‘s’
But not sure if they are available in our oem sizes yet
Would be interested too...

Yeah, the MPSS replacement is MPS4S which isn't out in 18 inch sizes yet (hopefully should be in March). I've got the PS4 on my M135i and I'm really happy with them, they were cheaper, better in the wet, quieter and 97% as good in the dry/trackdays. I'd imagine if fitting a new set at this time of year you'll notice a big difference in traction and wet grip in general.

I had a full set of MPS4 on front and rear on my M140 for a few months.

If you want a comfy ride and soft handling then the MPS4 are good they are also grippy BUT the handling feel is terrible, they feel floaty and loose because the sidewalls are so soft. I wouldn’t recommend them or ever use again but that’s my opinion

Out of curiosity, have you tried them with a couple of psi extra in them?

As others have said the PS4S is the replacement for the MPSS but they’re not available in 18s yet. But I’ve heard plenty of positive feedback on the regular PS4 which is still a new tyre for 2016, especially in wet weather many say it handles better. General consensus on the M lite Facebook group seems to be go for PS4 over MPSS.

Several motorbike tyres have very soft side walls, cuts down on unsprung weight, they all run quite a lot higher pressures.

NEW TYRES - MPSS or PS4

Post by OrtonM135i » Wed Jan 10, 2018 1:39 pm

MP - yes had them running originally at 33psi all round then in increments up to 38psi (cold pressures) to try and fix the issue. Still no good, added air pressure couldn’t make up for the incredibly soft sidewalls.

Compared to the MPSS the reason they perform better in the wetsuit be down to the fact they have incredibly soft tyre walls. Honestly they kill the turn in and response of the car completely and make it feel like your driving on 4 sponges. Don’t get me wrong they had very good grip, excellent handling in the wet and colder conditions.

I would never by the MPS4 again because I want the feeling of sharpness and turn in or general responsiveness. If you don’t have that on an MLite it kills all the fun in my opinion

If you want a comparison or to try for yourself then go to a kwik fit or local garage ask to see both tyres new and feel the difference between the MPSS and the MPS4. They are a totally different construction method as well. I’d stick to the MPSS any day of the week that’s just from my experience though.

I've heard very recently on this forum more about the "XL" tyre rating which gives better load rating etc and stiffens the sidewalls of the tyres - do you run the XL PS4 or regular out of interest?

I have PS4 on the back of our E91 and really rate them so far, good in all conditions, nice grip and comfortable.

Not tried anything but MPSS on the 240 though.

Thanks for the clarification. Surprising and disappointing in equal measure as I was pretty set on the PS4! Wet and cold weather performance is important to me and that's where I hear the PS4 is stronger than PSS.

Wonder if it's worth waiting for PS4S in March then....

I'm on Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3's currently, and they have a slightly soft sidewall too. Less noise, more wet grip, more comfort, softer turn-in.
