May have already dropped a polite suggestion to go try pulling the + paddle a few times up to 8th gear Image

To be fair to none enthusiasts a car which isn't a manual is just seen as an Auto/DSG/DCT by many, the technicalities are really down to looking at proper manufacturers tech spec sheets.

Baring in mind a huge percentage of 1 series owners think their car is front wheel drive it surprises me not one jot that people think the ZF auto is some sort of DSG/DCT etc.

Great box it is though. Don't really agree that its 'better' than the M cars DCT but it certainly isn't inferior either IMO, on a par for me. Having had both each box has its advantages.

Is there a reason BMW didn't opt for a DCT in the Mx35/40i?

Cost vs compromise
The ZF8 is an incredible auto, with characteristics nearly as good as the DCT.
So getting a mass produced option off the shelf that’s 95% as good as the specialist option just makes sense.

I wouldn't have bought the car if it were a DCT. Speed bumps and tight car parks are a DCT's worst nightmare. I despise them.

I wouldn't disregard it completely. You still have the manual gearbox. I've driven my mates scirocco dsg and that didn't seem bad at low speeds. The only gripe I had with that is that in manual mode it still changed up. That's what I love about our cars. It will bounce the limiter if you want it to.

The ZF in the LCI 2 is even better thanks to a new software update! Soooo smooth!

100% with you on this one, thats one of the main reasons I 'downgraded' (in some peoples eyes) from an F80 M3 to the M140i, I really do prefer the ZF over the DCT, feels smoother, less jerky, as a daily to live with much better in my opinion.
