MPE 140 Drone

Hi all,

I am wondering about an MPE for the 140i.
To be honest, I wouldn't if I didn't have occasional 'dreaded rattle', and a fear that occasional would turn into constant rattle the second the warranty runs out. I am not looking for excessive noise, quite happy with things the way the are.

So, is there a drone issue on the 140 auto? The 135 seems to be ok, but the 140 does not have the valve? The manual 140 does not have the MPE as an official option, some say due to drone at certain speeds, which is not an issue on the auto that has different ratios. To me this just mean the drone will be a different speed. What can you tell me?

Also seen suggested fixes for the rattle of disconnecting the valve (won't that cause drone?). Or twisting/preloading the spring (if it was that easy I am sure BMW would be doing this...?).

Lastly, is the MPE load enough to worry about trackday noise tests?

Had MPE fitted by TRL before I collected mine, in comfort it's fine and in sport a slight slight drone on motorway but that's what I wanted the MPE for, on cold start it's quite loud but settles down, only thing is it sounds better from outside the car, when my wife pulls away from home in the mornings it sounds awesome just not enough noise when your in the car due to the excellent build quality of the cabin.

My SE auto was replaced with an MPE as a fix for the rattle...

I like the different and louder sound, particularly in sport.

I do not like the vibrations I can feel through the seat under load at approx 1500 revs occasionally nor the drone at exactly 70 mph, fine a couple mph’s above or below in comfort??

I also don’t like how far the tips stick out but that was something I expected having read a few threads on here.

Luckily I don’t do many miles (mainly evening/rest day blasts!) and certainly minimal on motorways so whilst the drone is disappointing it’s not something I experience regularly.

I’ve had it back in to see if the fitment could be altered but of course ‘that’s how it is’ with a nice citnow vid attached.

I’ll likely leave it a 1k miles or so to see if it beds in and the vibrations disappear, if not I will take it to a specialist exhaust place to hopefully find a solution.

If I had paid for it I would be disappointed but at the end of the day it’s a solution I agreed to and I do really prefer the ‘meatier’ (?) sound it provides but in all honesty, in hindsight I’d keep the standard exhaust.

I’ve never tinkered or modified my cars mechanically and this experience reinforces my personal view that it is not for me.

Try and get a drive in a MPE equipped car OP and good luck with whatever solution you decide!

I find the inside noise pretty good after about 3k miles. Probably not going to get a midpipe either for now, the pops and burble are very noticeable now.

As for the drone, its been discussed a lot, even in comfort there is a bit of drone at exactly 2k RPM in 8th gear (although some racers may find it OK too). So I either go faster or downshift to 7.
You shouldnt get any vibrations through the cabin though, that may be a mounting or other issue.

EDIT: would be better to test one yourself beforehand of course :) also yes, the tips arent sunk in enough, I had to trim the tailpipes.

I also found the drone and vibration offensive at first but I'm now 2-3k in and it's now much more civilized! In comfort if you try hard you can only just feel a vibration and the drone at 70 is probably similar or slightly quieter than road noise. It's nice to have the slight reminder you're driving a more powerful car but in sports mode I wish the pops and bangs were easier to hear from inside. I regularly find myself opening the window to listen...

I've heard the MPE doesn't make that much difference on the M140 and M240 compared to the M135/M235 Because the newer cars have an extra mid silencer? Indeed the demo car I drove. I didn't realise it had an MPE fitted until I got out and walked around the back.

Anyone compared the two?

The M135i with MPE has more pop´s and bang´s due to the lack of mid silencer and is noticeble louder overall then the M140i with MPE.

A BCS midpipe (silencer delete) will give you more sounds and pop´s and bang´s.

Had a MPE on my car for about 15 thousand miles now and I find it, overall, a decent upgrade over the standard item. It is a fairly quiet compared to its competitors though. Although start up is almost too loud now! The exhaust tips can easily be adjusted to suit if you find they stick out too far.

It does drone mildly at around 1,500rpm under load and sends a bit of vibration through the back of the seat.
It does not make a loud noise, but it is a bassy vibrationy feeling, which most modification minded people wouldn't even classify as drone. Standard people such as myself do. :mrgreen: Should be fine for most people though.

I had a long motorway drive the other day and tried to understand the nature of drone and the ways to go around it.
It drones more on uphill sections as the engine is under more load. It doesn't drone as much at downhill and relatively straight sections.
If you put the gearbox into sport mode it won't use 8th gear and it will be above 2k rpm so you wouldn't have the drone.
If you were to drive around 80mph+ you would be over 2k rpm on 8th gear so I would assume it wouldn't drone then ( but obvioulsy that would be illegal so I wouldn't recommend such behaviour ;).

About the vibration, if I drive the car with my coat on, it dampens the vibration so not so obvious. If I drive with a shirt, etc. I can feel it through my lower back and it annoys me.

I am currently trying to go back to standar exhaust, but the more I drive the MPE, the more I feel like I will miss the pops and bangs.

Mine has a slight drone, but if the radio volume of over about two notches it can’t be heard. It’s not like some fart can chav exhaust would drone. And when it’s under load sounds amazing.

I also thought about swapping back to standard but then I don’t want a chopped up exhaust for no reason so to speak.

That and drone/vibration issues aside it does undoubtedly sound ‘better’ so I think I’d miss it. I’ll give more layers a go see if it helps!

Thanks for the input. I think I'll stay on standard, last thing I want is vibration and a car that is not refined at 80 ish. Just wish I had some security that the dreaded rattle wont get worse...

Just for information, the very slight droan is quieter at 80 than at 70. Plus if you can argue a free one, you can try it out and if you don't like it sell it for a lot more than a second hand standard system.

I like your thinking! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. But isn't it a one way street? Isn't there cutting involved to make the mpe fit?
