New Forum Member Saying Hi (With a Question)

Post by JCM140 » Sat Apr 28, 2018 2:48 pm

Hi All,

Ex-lurker here. Assuming all goes well I should soon be the proud owner of a Valencia Orange/ Black Dakota M140i from BMW approved used. :D

I'm currently a Mk6 Golf GTI owner, but have been looking forward to trading up for some time. Test drove both a Golf R and an M140i (deep black) last weekend, and fell in love with the motor. The test car was almost base spec., but the vehicle I'm hoping to purchase has kit like I couldn't believe!

I was unsure about the colour until I pored through the M140i photo thread in this sub-forum. That convinced me!

I was wondering, aside from the exhaust rattle, is there anything specific I should be looking out for when I check the car out? It will be a ZF auto, approx. 20k miles, 17-plate.

And, while I'm purchasing it, I expect I will be offered many different extras (e.g. paint protection, upholstery treatment etc.). Would you recommend any of them?

Many thanks!

JC

Some owners have reported issues with the ZF gearbox whining. Quite a few threads on here about it, eg. viewtopic.php?f=74&t=97466

On the paint and upholstery protection I think BMW use an autoglym kit which you can buy yourself for around £50. I’d either do it myself or pay a proper detailer to work on it, for the same price you’ll get a much better job. Gap insurance etc. can all be had much cheaper online too than in the dealer.

Before you pick the car up, ask about getting a BMW Screenwash Concentrate 1L bottle and BMW Oil 1L included for free. Also about a Spare Bulb & Fuse Set - mine cost £80 (!) so I think unlikely to be thrown in for free but may already come with one. BMW also do a neat little rechargeable socket torch. Always seems tight that they don't do a little 'pack' of these bits included in the hand-over, given the money you're spending.

Thanks for the responses. I will be sure to listen out for a whine from the gearbox, and see if they can throw in some bulbs and consumables.

Bumping this old thread, as I just picked it up!

ZF8, Valencia Orange, most of the options list including Adaptive Suspension, MPE, MP Spoiler.

I absolutely love the Valencia Orange, think it looks stunning in the sun.

Only thing is to replace the tyres before the autumn - 3mm tread on MPSS might be interesting once the weather turns...

I know i may be late - but if looking for gap/tyre/alloy insurance use ALA - and code MSE25 to get 25% off
If it's got breasts or wheels - it's going to give you trouble

That could be very helpful, so long as they cover used. Thanks!

EDIT: Sadly the car is too old to be covered by ALA.

Looks great. When you get new tyres I recommend the MPS4, I had them on my last one for a while and they were great in Autumn

That was my plan, yes. Proper all-season tyre. If I may ask, how was their durability?
