Suspension Noise

Post by LeChuck » Sun May 20, 2018 11:07 pm

Hi,

With the recent better weather I have been driving with my window down. When doing this I have noticed a slight 'kushing' noise when driving over bumps at low speed. This may be perfectly normal, but I'm getting the car in for a look at some minor warranty related things so thought I would ask if anybody else has experienced this?

Edit: I'm on adaptive dampers.

Cheers.

Not sure what "kushing" sounds like lol, but are you certain this is not the same noise that every shock absorber makes when compressing quickly?

I’m sure you are referring to a “psss” sound every modern shock absorber make. Perfect normal.

Does it sound like damper oil being rapidly forced through a high speed valve, "kuuush"?

Hi, thanks for the replies.

Yes the noise is a hydraulic sounding ‘psss’ or ‘kuuush’, its a pain trying to describe noises! As I said it may be perfectly normal but I’ve not heard it before on any of my previous cars so I thought I’d ask.

Thanks!

I'd look to see if you can isolate the noise – you could try driving over one of those narrow speed bumps one wheel at a time. If you can hear the same noise on both sides of the axel(s) then I'd deem it normal. If it is indeed isolated to a single corner then I'd count this as suspect.

Shouldn’t happen on a £40k BMW

Suspension Noise

Joking of course, if it’s what I think you are describing, then perfectly normal. What’s not normal is that you’ve never heard that sound before. Stand at the side of a road with speed bump and listen as cars go over it.

Thanks again for the replies. The sound appears to be the same from both sides, I'll take it as normal.
