You don’t have to be good at driving to have more fun in the bmw in all conditions

Just because a car grips and is safe on the limit doesn’t make it fun imo. I wouldn’t have bought an M140i if a little bit of oversteer scared me

I came from a 2015 Golf R Estate/Wagon variant to a 2017 M140i. Apart from the driving dynamics already mentioned, the M140i’s adaptive suspension rides must better than the R’s adaptive suspension (soaks up bumps better and is less jarring over broken surfaces).

However, practicality wise the R wins out with more storage (especially in the rear side doors, sunglasses holder in the front, deeper armrest binnacle, drawers under the front seat) and tech (adaptive cruise control and reverse cross traffic alert).

I was massively torn between the slightly more practical all wheel drive Golf vs that awesome B58 engine and premium feel of the M140i.
In the end, BMW blew the competion away with their discounts and financing. VW and others couldn't get near them.
A few 'Real Torque', Joe Achilles and other YouTube videos helped confirm my decision!
Just got to wait for the beast to be built now!

Agreed, Much the same reasoning for me, although between S3 in my case. Being able to get this phenominal engine and for a cheaper price, no second thought needed!

When is yours due?
Coming Soon: M140 MG, 5DR, 8ZF With some extras

I've driven a 200 Cup around Spa. Hands down one of the most enjoyable cars on track I've driven - All it had was a cam, suspension, cage and some performance friction stoppers and it was absolutely brilliant. The same day I drove a friends 911 Turbo and R26R and the Clio was more fun.

As for the little 140i, I really like mine. I went for it over the R because I just prefered the engine. I thought the R had a nicer interior, looked better, had a more premium feel to it, but the 140 won me over on the drive and as I use it every day for 60 miles of back roads to work, I'm glad I did.

I honestly don't find it that much of an animal, even in the wet, but I've had silly powered rwd cars with no driver nannies for years (911 GT2, 4.5 Cerbera), so perhaps my driving style suits the car. As a road car, I'm not even that bothered it's lacking a proper locking diff.

had a golf r for 2 years before my current m140i, both brilliant cars but completely different. When the weather allows the M140i for me is a much better car, the engine and interior for me make it a much more enjoyable car to drive, however for the winter and 90% conditons that we have in the UK IMO the Golf was a better car and more suited and capable. I would definitely own another, it also gave me absolutely zero problems in 2 years of ownership in which I rung its neck. The m140i has been back to the dealers over 5 times in less than a year so from my own personal perspective on ownership I can only say the golf was far more reliable, I get of course both marques have bad and good stories.

Being brutally honest if I was to in another 3 years look at another car it would probably be a golf R, unless the M140 xdrive available is special or half decent, it just makes much more sense to me personally for our climate and conditions in the UK.

I’ve come from having 2 s3’s and much prefer the 140. The interior was nicer in the s3 but that’s about the only thing I would say was better imo. You have to think about the consequences of planting your foot in the 140 whereas the s3 it didn’t really matter, was just a little boring to me.

Maybe it's because I've been driving RWD for years, but I enjoy the fun of driving a RWD car in cold/wet conditions, certainly makes for some good fun when pressing on! :D

Even my old 1995 Mr2 was fun, if slightly dangerous in all but bone dry conditions.

Due date currently 30/09/18. Can't wait! Looked at the S3 too, but even less reduction than the Golf.
Hopefully there'll be a way of tracking progress to obsess over! 😄

Good to get another vote for 200 cup :-).. I've always been a BMW owner and the Clio has really taken me by surprise.

A load of people I know seem to have been buying S3 saloons and slate our lovely little BMWs saying the S3 is a better car. I don't see it myself?! I've owned a Scirocco R, Leon Cupra TFSI and Golf GTI Edition 30 in both manual and DSG and still find the baby M just more enjoyable with loads more character on the road. Nothing quite beats that straight-6 boosted howl when cracking on. No VAG seems to be able to match it in my eyes!
