M135i steering wheel clunk

Post by JamieP » Mon Jul 16, 2018 9:52 pm

Evening all,

Just been out for a drive in my new (to me) m135i and, when parking up, noticed that the steering wheel was making a knocking sound when turning the wheel from left to right - it does it when the engine is off or on.

It sounds very loud from the outside of the car and doesn't strike me as normal...it seems to be a fairly common issue from a quick google, but just wanted to check this is definitely not normal before I phone the dealer in the morning to take a look (as i'm far from a mechanic )...

Hi mate,

Hope your enjoying the new car, I am almost certain that what your are experiencing is a steering rack on its way out.

I recently had mine done but luckily mine was under warranty so didn’t pay a penny.

Same symptoms as you by moving the steering wheel left to right and sometimes when driving off whilst turning at slow speeds.

Hope you get it sorted soon
Will

Thanks for the advice - does seem to be the rack from my amateur google research, but seems a bit premature for a car that's only done 30k!

It was approved used so should be covered by warranty as well - just hope they don't bring out the "it's normal" line :starwars:

M135i steering wheel clunk

Mine wasn’t quite as easy to replicate, but a similar knock that, even from underneath, felt like a steering rack.

I ended having an O/S/F lower arm fitted under warranty. I can’t remember which lower arm.

Problem solved.

Mine went when my car was on 15k miles! Apparently a common fault.

If it is the rack there is a potential cheap fix, not sure how permanent it is though

Need to make some wango fandango tool to be able to adjust it and tighten it. Am wondering if any lovely forum members would be willing to lend one they've made to me so I can try and eradicate my knocking. Stupid steering rack!

The fix above works fine for me the tool can be made chapels for about 4 quid buy some 4mm thick ally plate and some M6 bolts and nuts the dimensions to place hem are in the link above. I tightened my rack up now I have no more knocking at all and feels much better, 6000miles later still spot on with no knocks. You can do it with he car on the ground and reach through to tighten it takes about 5 mins to do.

Cheers all - it's under warranty so taking it in, hopefully they don't try and argue it's "wear and tear" or something...
