M240i LCi headlights

Post by Jennals » Sun Aug 05, 2018 10:29 am

Morning all,

I am picking up a Feb 18 M240i with the LCi package next weekend. I am so excited, the only part I wanted to discuss was the fact that it’s front lights aren’t the hexagonal headlights like bmw advertise everywhere? They seem to be almost identical to the headlights of a 2014 M235i? Besides that the tail lights are different, I’ve hot the new I drive system and the electronic black dash board.

Please could anyone explain the differences?

Thank you.

BMW Icon adaptive LED is an option that isn’t on yours?

I believe they maybe adaptive LED headlights, but the shape is not hexagonal like some other new LCi 2 series shapes.

Are there many differences from the old to these newer LED lights?

Many thanks for your help and your reply.

They look like non-adaptive to me. All 2 series LCIs have LED front and rear as standard.

Brilliant thanks for clearing that up. Is there still benefits of having the non adaptive LED headlights over the xenons on the previous models?

My preference is Xenon, I think the basic LED lights aren’t as powerful.

But both way better than halogen.

Interestingly, having had a succession of cars with adaptive xenons (all BMW) and a brief 2 year interlude with Mercedes adaptive LED, my new 2018 M240i with standard LED lamps (and high beam assist) are, by some margin, the best of all - powerful, well defined pattern on dip, very long range on main beam and quick to go to main beam when they can. I don't really miss the 'looking around corners' element or the cutout of a vehicle in front - so the £150 high beam assist and standard LED is good value compared to the Icon fully adaptive LED in my opinion.

I have the adaptive LED's on my LCI m240i and the missis has adaptive xenons on her e91 335d. When I drive hers I have to keep checking that the lights are even on, they are rubbish in comparison....I have to say though. I regret picking them on the options as they were eye wateringly expensive (about £650 i seem to remember) and I don't see a great deal of benefit to the lights moving about on corners and such...plus I always turn the main beam off myself anyway as I have been flashed a few times when using high beam assist because it doesn't dip them in time.

My last four BM's

M235 with adaptive xenon's
435d with adaptive Xenons.
E92 325i with standard Xenons
M240 LED's

The E92 was without doubt the most powerful lights of the four cars. Super bright dipped beams

The M240i is the worst. Main beam is fine. Dipped is both weaker and with the LED cut off so sharp. no light is scattered up the hedgerows

in fact my wife Mini Clubman with LED's has better lights than my 2 series.

Surprised by this....the adaptive LEDs on my m240i are fantastic. When on full beam the embankments on both sides of the road are very well illuminated....almost as much as the road itself. The adaptive Xenons in the GF's e91 pale in comparison.

So a good way of telling that a car has the adaptive headlights on the M240i LCi is because it is the hexagonal shape?

If anyone does have a minute to check her over before I pick her up on Saturday that would be great, thank you.

Strange the difference in opinions. Personally I found my non-adaptive LEDS with high beam assist on my M135i LCI a fair bit brighter and had better distance than my adaptive xenons on my 2 series. I would go LED with high beam assist over adaptive xenons with high beam assist given the choice again.

Hi, that car does not have adaptives. The easiest way to tell apart from the shape is that apaptives have "BMW Adaptive LED" written down the side of the headlight. :)

I think you will find the adaptives shine at a higher level along the kerbside. I found this on my 435d at least. The easy way to tell is to turn off the adaptives function and see the nearside light move inward. I don't think the E92 got full adaptive. Just steering input movement.
