The mega hatches, RS3 / A45 and next Gen Focus RS will all be over 400bhp, 306 just isn't enough. Reduction in power, loss of 6cyl sound , and the safety squad adding AWD - not to mention a huge PPF 😁. Get your 140 now people, it's the last of this breed before extinction!!
M135i is to compete with A35, S3 etc. M2 competition is a rival for the A45 and RS3.
Pretty sure every comparison vid I’ve seen online, puts the mlites against the A45, RS3, RS focus and the Gold R, and the BM always wins in the fun factor department, and one of the cheapest of the lot, can’t believe they will drop the HP down that much, it will probably be a different tuned package for the M performance version compared to the x2

A45 and RS3 are in diferent price and performance brackets. The next M135i will be competing against the S3, Golf R and Merc A35, plus front wheel drive cars such as the the CTR and Megane Trophy.

Video reviewers equate fun to sliding around and RWD based steering, which is great on a track with no traffic coming the other way, but not my idea of fun on the roads I drive on.

I have a feeling that the new "down graded" 135 leaves space for a proper M-version 1 series, basically a new m140i, b58 engine and M2 components for the chassi dampeners LCAs etc. Doesnt make sense to me to just forfeit the hot hatch segment to the competition.

Agree, BM shouldn't make do with a 300bhp hatch when others are 400+. The next Gen Focus will likely be a similar price point so itl always be compared to that. At 306bhp awd 4pot they are just building a copy of the S3, Audi already do that well, BM need to offer something different

It’s all speculation at the moment, no one has driven one yet, all the online reviewers haven’t driven one or even had one in their possession.

Not an engineering masterpiece - A45 Amg only has interesting 4 pot engine.. stupid decision from Bmw to move out from 6 cyl and rwd in 1-series.
The A45 develops a lot of power for a 2.0 and Mercedes did spend a lot of money on it, but it's not got the most character to it. All the popping and farting is down to the exhaust. The engine is actually quiet.

The comparisons against the RS3 and A45AMG are a bit unfair too. They do cost a bit more than an Mlite.

I wonder if there will be an Mlite and a full M car in hatchback guise next time to go up against those cars?

I personally doubt it, BMW have already said they're keeping the 2er on the RWD CLAR platform so they can develop the next gen small M car.

The recipe for the next 1er is looking a bit poor. I suspect most decent drivers on here will naturally migrate to the 2er, unless they need to transport a dog or something.

So disappointing that BMW don't compete with Audi and Merc in regard to fast family cars, no 'proper M' 1 series, or any touring models. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do, wonder if it's just positioning. Anyway it sucks as it means I can't have an M car and I want one :(

Bit off topic but have you seen the M5 tourer that Evolve posted the other week, guy who built it has done a great job

Reason for the changes between the engines is one is pre WLTP tested (6 cylinder) and one is post WLTP (4 cylinder). Should the 6 be tested post WLTP, the emissions would be a lot higher. It is around 207 I believe with PPF.

I thought it would be a WLPT thing, but couldn't find any figures.

I think the comparison is valid. According to press release X2 figures are taken from WLTP test but converted to NEDC-values. If you check for example German 1-series brochure, M140i xDrive has 180 g/km C02 reading and there's the same description about emissions as with the X2. Pure WLTP reading for M140i xDrive is 212 g/km and the old NEDC-value was 169 g/km.

https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/a ... vity-coupe:
CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.
(combined fuel consumption 8.4-8.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 191-185 g/km)*

*All figures are peliminary.
...
The values are already based on the test cycle according to the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to allow a comparison between vehicles.

I’m not a fan of the new 4 pot move by BMW but the new engine based on the stats at the top of the thread is obviously going to help BMW meet new EU regs and those are huge savings in fuel and Emissions vs the current B58.

All they are doing is reducing emissions in lower end models so they can keep the power in the M cars. Aston Martin released the Cygnet for this reason - it was a joke by them to make sure they met new emissions levels for the entire range which they did so could release more and more powerful cars.
