Tyre choices for 8.5J ET42 square setup

Post by Element » Wed Sep 19, 2018 7:35 pm

Wheels with suitable offsets available locally to me are and always have been a challenge as a 1 or 2 series owner, but I managed to pick up a set of Vossen rep wheels: 19" 8.5J ET42 all around.

Now I'm fairly happy to stick a 255/30/19 section on the rear, but surely a 225/35/19 would be a bit of a stretch on an 8.5J?

Should I go up to 235/35/19? Would they fit first off given that the front would likely be closer to the front struts and would a 235 with a 35 profile still be within range compared to the 255/30 rear?

Nice rims.

I'd be fitting a 245/30/19 on the front, something like a Pilot Sport 4S probably.

You read my mind regarding the aquaplaning potential given the significantly wider front. I've always had decent performance in the wet out of the Goodyear Asymmetric 2/3, but I'll have a look the PS4S's if I can find them :)

Do you think a 245 would not be overly optimistic given the wheel is, by my calcs, going to be <10mm closer to the strut?

I'm running 245mm at ET40 tyre centreline, which clear no problem.

Are you putting winter tyres on your stock rims?

No need. I'm based in South Africa. Our winters are...lets say "pathetic" :D

Looks superb, can you give me the link please?
I've tried 225x35 tyres on 8,5 ET42 rims: no good. A bit too stretchy and a clear lack of rim protection.

Any recommendations with regards to tyre pressures to run?

Completely out of spec on the wheel/tyre combo versus what BMW recommends for their OEM 19's setup so I'm a bit puzzled as to what I should be running.

Sorry mate. Literally just walked into my local wheel and tyre place, was shown a catalogue and said: "Order these!".

What are you using currently?

I'd start around 33psi all round, see how that feels for a week?

Sounds about right then, or does it handle terribly?

Car looks like it's crying out for lowering. Any idea if Eibachs would cause rubbing with the new wheel and tyre setup?

Would a 245/35R18 fit on front of M140 on a 8.5j ET43 -45 rim? I was going to go with 8J ET40 and 245 square but 8.5J opens up a lot more wheel options.

I'd never thought of that as a possibility. Dunno why
