M135i > 340i Touring M Sport... has anyone made the switch?

Post by mehtaman » Tue Oct 16, 2018 1:57 pm

HI All,

As much as I enjoy my M135i, its just not big enough now that I have a little lad and all the paraphernalia to carry around.

Has anyone made the switch over from a 1 series to 3 series and more so the 340i Touring with the M Sport pack?
I want to keep the performance side of things and hope the 3 series offers some more space for car seats, buggies and bags.

Thanks in advance.

Would love one of these in a few years.

Fast estates = super cool.

Following this with interest as we will be needing more space next time too.

If you’re talking current F31, I’d imagine you’d need one with the MPPSK to keep up with an M140i. With the new G21, it will probably be quicker than the M140i, as it’s to be rated at 275kw stock. Plus you’ll be able to spec a factory diff :woohoo:
Now: F20 M140i Auto: GS + black, lots of toys, BCS mid pipe and no badges :D
Previous: Honda Accord i-DTEC (remapped to 221bhp), Audi A3 TFSI Quattro S-Line, various company cars, Golf IV GT TDI

Had 3 series tourings since 2005 until the M140i as company cars.
Don't think they are that such bigger to be honest!

Thanks for the heads up, i'll try check a 3 touring out over the weekend and see how it looks.

I am hoping that with the new G21 coming out the F31 will be in a good price range when PX'ing my M135i.

Finding a used 340i Touring with a good spec will be hard, I have seen one on eBay that way out my budget but something to aim towards:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253923412226
Apparently it was spec'ed by BMW Salisbury as an "M Performance" example, with "£12k" worth of M-Sport add-ons.

Berry Heathrow also have a 0% PCP deal on the new 3 series (£399/m with £399 deposit) , not sure if that applies to the 340i shadow touring though :P

0% on saloons only at the moment, touring will follow once the new one is released im sure. Also Apr might be 0 but the gfv drops like a stone so it's not just quite as good a deal as you'd think. Still worth a look though

That is true, I’ve steered clear of PCP deals for that reason and also the final balloon payment on a 340i would be substantial if I planned to get out of the contract.

I would've if they did an auto.
Only didn't go for the 335D because the spec's available made no sense with providers deleting all sorts of standard options to get them under the limit.
So the M135i is still here albeit for sale and I got into a different Estate with 4wd as it was a ridiculously good deal.

For sale - pm me for more detail!

Thought about it as my next car. Would need the MPPSK for a start.

I do like fast estates and there is a good choice these days

Just a shame it’s so similar inside to the 1er

I agree, I’ve had a touring in the past, the boot isn’t as big as you may think, I found the inner wheel arches to be quite restrictive. I’d recommend you you take a trip to the dealers and load it up with seat, prams etc so you get an idea if it’ll suit your needs.

I used to drool over this........

We have an older e91 touring and it is definitely a compact touring, its got a reasonable amount of space but if you need a LOT of room I'd maybe look at a 5er? As JonD said have a ride to the dealer with your "paraphernalia" and try it out :)

Now that’s a nice example!
I’ll definitely go check out a 3 tourer and try to load up what I can in the boot.
Thanks for the info

We were in the same position a few years ago and ended up with a 3 touring. A few years after that we ended up with an extra kiddo and a 5 touring (which we still have). Ironically now the small people are bigger we don't have nearly as much to cart about and can go away for the weekend, large dog included, with everything we need (including scooters etc etc) in the M135i plus roof box.

I'm sure you'll see when you have a good luck, but to me it feels like with a 3 you gain a little boot space over the 1 but the cabin isn't much different. With a 5 you gain both cabin and boot space (boot space massively so) over the 3.

If you plan on making any more small people I'd have a serious look at a 5er.

340i is on my list for when the 5 goes :)

Definitely food for thought;
The 535i M Sport Touring is actually looking a little cheaper than the 335i/340i M Sport Touring if I look past on some M styling.
An older V10 M5 Touring is also falling into the search scope too

Plenty of space in the F20.. I got 3 kids and a dog and all fit fine - with the misses.
