OK small update on BMW approved. BMW UK currently has 4 cars on sale from my DB:

I am not going top post images yet or name and shame them but will give you brief warning to check on my site before you buy anything from main dear anytime soon...

2 x 2 series Stolen/Recovered (One is m240i with small scratch on the side) - those are not the big worry
1 Series - Water/Flood sold as Unrecorded Salvage
5 Series - Damaged up front and was labelled cat S on salvage auction but marker disappeared and it's HPI clear, plenty of airbags deployed

I will be reaching tomorrow to BMW for their comment.

Fun times
This is just amazing/terrifying in equal proportions. I am sure you have gold there Arnie. I have spotted a number of suspicious approved used in the past - mileage very low but only in the last year. Now suggests something like stolen/recovered. Now that's fine if everyone knows about it and makes their choices accordingly. But it is NOT fine for dealers - especially premium priced ones - to fail to reveal or actively conceal the information.
Totally agree. it's an absolute disgrace that dealers actively hide the history of a car.

Organisations such as Auto trader should have a responsibility to run every car reg through a tool such as Arnie's before accepting the advertisement on their site. Pass the cost onto the seller by all means but still do the due diligence to ensure what's being advertised is actually what it seems.

Awesome tool that you have developed Arnie. Kudos.

Don't forget Occams Razor. Go for c**k up over conspiracy. BMW may actually be happy to discover the history.

The diligence performed has not shown anything. How are they to know there is an issue ?

The physical inspection hasn't shown questionable repairs. Probably shown some repairs (should they highlight that? Maybe).

The 5 series that "stopped being cat S". How could they know ?

Undoubtedly there is a problem. But in many cases the dealer could not reasonably be expected to know.

Differentiating between a vehicle that was subject to a total loss claim and repaired and one that sufferered similar damage and was repaired without a claim is always going to be difficult.

There is no central register. If there were what should in contain to provide viable secure consumer data ?

Every insurance claim made on a vehicle? Every claim paid on a vehicle (a substantillay different thing).

Of course any non insurance funded repairs will be missed (thats quite a lot).

I am genuinely at a loss of how it could work. Lots more regulation. That just makes it more difficult for the vast majority.

That is why Arnies site is highly useful. It brings together more of the data. It only works because he has been scraping details for years prior.

I just got back from interesting meeting and I can announce I will be able to provide if vehicle was Private Hire Taxi at any point on my reports.

The info will come from https://www.vehicleancestry.co.uk and they hold records for up to 10 years in case of some councils and currently cover almost every single council in UK with their records and updated regularly 380 ish If I remembered it right.

Prices of my products wont change tho so you get HPI + Salvage + Private Hire Check in one very good reportImageImage

Arnie,

Other areas to consider:-

Uber (do these end up being registered with a local authority. I am doubtful, I thibk the operator might).

Uber eats. A rapidly expanding area.

Deliveroo.

As ride hailing type apps increase they will account for a larger share and be harder to detect.

I went into https://www.sytner.co.uk

From all 11k cars I found just a few but...

Stolen/Recovered (Almost no Damage, tiny scratches) - 3 cars
Can N Write-off - 1 car
Used/Unrecorded - 2 cars

Below Tesla is Used/Unrecorded sale so HPI would never had it in their DB:

I've had dealings with that garage in the past. They are fly-by-nights.

The colour match of the front wing is a mile off.

Hello All, Just to show you a few examples of ex taxis.
BMW 730d EK18??? £44,000 described to me by the BMW dealer as "private individual that lives locally to us" licensed by Braintree Council as a private hire vehicle.
BMW 530e LC18??? £31,000 described to me by the BMW dealer as "Thank you for your interest in our fantastic 530e SE this was owned by our specialist sales department and was used as a demonstrator. Licensed by transport for London as a private hire vehicle

The above are just a couple of 1yr old cars but we have over 28500 records of previously licensed BMW's

I had a call this morning from a very distressed lady who found out real history of HPI Clear car via www.vcheck.uk and she is not very happy. It was bought by her daughter using all savings and they started noticing things on the car which are not right and it turns out it had frontal damage and all airbag deployed. Dashboard was changed from a different model but there is no guarantee airbags were installed correctly etc.

In relation to BMWs... DO NOT BUY BELOW if you are looking for 118d :P

I contacted Evans Halshaw about one of the cars under their carstore.com brand and sent them link to report on vcheck.uk. Got completely ignored;) so it looks like they are not interested in knowing this info either;)

Is there a way so finding cars insured for full business use - not just commute / to meetings? Would help pick up Hermes, takeaway delivery etc ( that's if the are all insured....). Just an idea for product dev.

Or other way;) it many times was cheaper with business on my policy.

I think ex-taxi info is quite relevant tho, but insurance itself can be misleading.
