High-pitched noice from engine

Post by V0lker » Thu Jan 31, 2019 6:08 pm

Hey everyone,

when standing still (gearbox in N or P) and holding, for example, 3000 rpm, I notice a high(er)-pitched sound coming from the engine. It sounds turbine-like and can very well be compared to the sound superchargers make https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCrUQb_4xhA - just more silent.

Of course it's also audible when driving, otherwise it wouldn't bug me. You can't hear it when flooring the car because then everything else is louder. It's most noticeable when driving in normal city traffic in first and second gear, above 2000 rpm.

The BMW tech said it doesn't make him worry, but I'm not convinced as he didn't seem sure at all.

What do you guys think? Completely normal? Not normal at all? Even if it's normal, I would really like to understand what it is as the BMW tech just threw possible sources at me :)
