I searched for this topic as I'm about ready to pull the trigger on extended warranty myself. Nice that someone already asked about covering lowering springs. Noticed in another thread that the T&C on BMW Extended Warranty exclude:

" - Vehicles modified from the original manufacturer’s specification."

But as marco_polo has already mentioned, would hopefully not interfere with drivetrain, etc. I guess it would be a bit difficult for BMW to turn around and say because you fitted lowering springs we're not covering your air conditioning compressor failure. Still one would hope they wouldn't use springs/spacers or a roof spoiler, AutoID door mirrors etc. as a breach of contract somehow and shut you down.

Anyone have any direct experience of this kind of thing?

It says excludes vehicles that are modifed, not that it excludes modifications.

With the text they use I would want written confirmation that they will offer any coverage at all.

Hmmm..... I kept my original springs just in case I needed to refit but could be a right nightmare to get them put back on in the event of the car having to go back to BMW for something like engine/gearbox failure.

I think they will only reject your claim, if the damage is related to the modification you have done, otherwise, what difference would that make?! but like anything else, if you are in doubt check with them and get it in writing!

But under which warranty ? The BMW standard warrany of the extented insurance backed one ?

shame they charge extra for doing it monthly, as the £69 pm for 12 months, equals to £828!!
If you're able, stick it on a balance transfer credit card and pay it off monthly. Even if there's a 2% fee you'll save a fair bit!

I recently had a claim refused on OH mini. 2 years 20k.

I drove it for the first time in ages and the clutch felt spongy and high. It would take WOT in 2nd and 4th so I decided it was probably ok till service.

Needless to say it failed a few days later.

Clutch was worn and had overheated, that was probably at the point of failure. DMF was also trashed.

Warranty denied no manufacturing defect. Misuse. 2.5k by the time all done.

To be fair ir is usedconstantly in stop start traffice (she works in the community). I guess she rides the clutch a bit too, but because the 1.5 has such an insanely high first. However she has never had a problem befor. Her 116i for 4 years and 40k was her prior car and has typically had new cars for 4/5 years.

I can only assume the mini has a "just adequate" clutch.

I did eventually get goodwill from mini of 80% of the parts which meant the bill was about 1200 in the end.

She was planning to buy a JCW. She isnt now.

About 6 months ago I had a clutch replaced on my Wife's 6 year old R59 mini. I was prepared for a big bill as i didn't expect the warranty to cover it.

Clutch was making a loud clicking noise - more of a banging really - when pressed.

Called out mini ES and they took me to the dealer who did all the sucky teeth bit - told me it was £500 just to remove the gearbox to look at it. So I bent over and authorised it, when i got the call later they told me something had broken and caused the clutch to fail, so it was covered.

I don't remember what it was but the bill would've been well over 2k.

So that's 4 years of warranty payments I've saved :-)

One thing I didn't realise is that if you don't take up the warranty as soon as your new car warranty ends you actually pay more , with emergency cover £100 excess £675.00 or £66.00 per month , £ 250 excess £534 or £54 per month , there is no zero excess option available.
