Max size tyres for...

Post by kalv » Mon Feb 11, 2019 7:57 pm

Hi,

Any thoughts on what the maximum width/profile tyre i can go with on the following:

8.5x19 ET43
9.5x19 ET50

Assuming the safe/trusted bet is 225/35/19 and 255/30/19... just wondering if I could get a wider tyre considering the rims are bigger (in both ways) and is there any real advantage on going wider (apart from extra grip)? Downside I guess will be added expense?

Luckily the MPS4s are available in the 225/35 & 255/30 - I haven't checked any other sizes.

Many thanks as always.

You could certainly go for a 235/35/19 front if you fancied less nasty understeer? You might even squeak a 245/30 on the front, they'd be quite close to the strut though, try before you buy if possible.

A 265/30/19 should just fit on the back if you wanted more traction?

Yes extra grip but imho it also looks better.
I definitely believe these cars are "under tyred" from the factory for the most part.

Not much difference in price in it either between say a 225 and a 245 or a 255 and a 265.

MPS4 is a very good choice of tyre too btw. It's what I have and they're fantastic.

Thanks.. I currently run the MPS4 on my 436M alloys in standard 18" sizes and they're great.. the MPS4s are available in 19" so am thinking 235/35/19 on the front and stick to the 265/30/19 on the rear.

This option is actually £40 cheaper than the 225/255 tyres - Lol

I spoke/asked the supplier of the wheels and his response is:

"You can try to use 235 and 265, however I can ensure you that there will be rubbing issues. For the 235/35 in the front, it might be possible that it even does not clear the suspension on the inner side. On the rear you would have to drive a very high chamber angle and do fender rolling in order to avoid rubbing issues. We highly recommend 225 and 255 tires, especially if you will be using Michelin Pilot 4S tires.

Wonder if my local tyre garage will be friendly enough to try a wider tyre before buying???

They should do, if they have them in stock.

This is what a 265mm tyre looks like at ET50: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=58392&start=60#p797318

Up to you though, go for the super-stretched safe fitment if you want to play it cautiously.

Will the fact that my rims will be 19” in size and also 9.5 wide on the rear (same offset ET50 as the 18x9 in the example) make it just as compatible?

The tyre walls will be slightly more angled in your case (1/4") but the centreline of the tread will obviously be in the exact same position.

As you're so nervous, go for the skinny stretched tyres this time, see how much room there is around them for next time. If you drive fairly hard you'll be through them in a few months.

Should help show/explain the wheels... I can’t seem the view the tyre sizes or find out who’s car it is to ask what’s on this M240i

PS4 are available in 245/35/18, but MPS-4S aren't sadly.
