Fed up **fixed**

Post by racey1979 » Mon Feb 11, 2019 8:52 pm

Car been in for software update today and also for the distorting rear passenger side HK speaker. A visit to the dealer is very predictable for me now......I left the car and said to my missis.....I bet you my eyeballs that they phone up with some excuse about the speaker and they can't do anything about it....BMW will say it's a characteristic...blah blah blah. Low and behold, got the phone call...."Hi, your car is all done.....errrr, as for the speaker, unfortunately we can't do anything about it, BMW issued a bulletin about possible vibrations from the rear speakers and there is no fix for it so it is what it is".....I just went berserk. Might as well use the the warranty as sh*t paper because that's all its worth. To top it off he gave me some sob story about how this was a worst case scenario for them as it has cost them money to do this investigation and they won't get paid for it.......well boo :censored: hoo. They say the speaker is fine, its the surrounding trim that rattles. This might be true....but their fob off attitude just absolutely stinks and they made no effort whatsoever to resolve this. Is it too much to ask that a £600 premium stereo upgrade on a supposedly premium vehicle should not rattle and distort ?? He said don't play it quite as loud......Yeah mate, great solution. "A family run business that puts the customer first"....absolute horse sh*t.
Anyone else with HK get distortion/rattles from the rear speaker(s) ?

Wow nice rant!! 🤣

Hope it didn’t cost too much, FYI I do occasionally get small rattle type vibrations from my upgraded system in the same place, but it’s rare and I’m not that bothered about it being so busy.

I use an app called “tone generator” (iphone) which vibrates at different controllable rates and can usually find all sorts of trim/speaker noises

It's their predictable dismissive attitude that really annoys me though.....I'm no serial complainer either, it's been in for maybe 3 or 4 minor issues and every time it's the same story, they are straight on the defensive and just seem completely uninterested in listening to your problems. I'm trying a different dealer as I've lost all confidence in them.

I agree with your comments and sentiment. Sadly learned over the years that good service is almost non existant, and if you want something done properly there is almost no option except do it yourself. Be that your car service, building work, whatever...

On the plus side, fixing something yourself is always satisfying.

So, accepting you shouldn't have to.... if it is trim, look at sticking some sound deadening material in the area. This changes resonant frequencies and may stop the buzz. Just turn the sound up and put your finger on various spots and see if you can stop the buz, then stick on a strip of the dynomat (or similar) on the hidden side where you had your finger. All the litle brackets where the amp is are damped this way on my car.

You should get an email from BMW soon asking for feedback on your recent visit - your response goes onto the dealers website so give them what they deserve.

I gave bad feedback to my dealer, got a grovelling call a week or so later promising better service in future and then another BMW email a couple of weeks later to see if I was happy with how I was dealt with and do I want more contact. Never had that for service department before so BMW UK obviously trying to shake things up.

Sadly BMW just don't seem to care any longer, customer service and product quality has really fallen. Just check out the results of the most recent JD Power survey, properly dry-fisted by Kia/Hyundai/etc.

I'm having to wait a month for a small oil service, and "fitting me in" was apparently "a major inconvenience".

Which dealer was it - because it sounds like the one near me!

I have just found this rattle with mine!!

If I have the volume up more than half way on certain songs...for example on Wow. by Post Malone, I got horrible distortion from the rear.

I might take mine in to complain.

I’ve noticed a front passenger side on my F30 with HK resonating at a certain frequency.

BMW probably cheaping out on isolating the speakers from the doors sufficiently?

And BMW garages are getting shoddier too. More expensive and worse service.
Once my warranty is up I’m in two minds about keeping an F car.

Big thanks for this mate, I downloaded the app as suggested and I couldn't believe how effective it was. On low tones the back shelf started to rattle like Hell and it wasn't the speaker, it's these bloody things..........

The drivers side wasn't too bad but the passenger side was really bad and the vibration stopped as soon as I put my finger on it. Now, anyone got any suggestion of a discreet way I can stop this rattling without glueing it shut with Araldite ??
I did say to BMW, it could be the surrounding trim but when they come across so unhelpful and unwilling its really disheartening....not to mention infuriating.

Not really isolated to BMW either. My mate had similar experiences with Audi.

They concentrate on sales for the big win, then aren't interested in keeping customers happy, which is really short sighted IMO.

Many years ago I bought a Kia Sportage as a bit of a workhorse - wasn't bothered with image as was going to get some abuse. Service was up there with the best and I couldn't fault them. The service guy said how they try to treat people so they will be repeat long term return customers. Brands like BMW could learn a thing or two from them.

The ISOFIX bracket covers buzz/vibrate in my F11 too (along with the ones in the roof for clipping the luggage net up). They're absolute cack and do my head in.

I get a buzz from the dash/door tweeters in the 1er on rough road surfaces (ones where they chuck down tarmac then stones on top). Goes away if I wedge my finger in the gap between the very front of the door card and dash. I konw what the dealer will say if I take it in so I can't be bothered and might sort it myself at some point. Shame really...

Good tip on the frequency generator app. Thanks!
