Catch Can Ordered....

Post by marco_polo » Wed Apr 02, 2014 9:16 pm

I've gone for one of these Catch Cans: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131075614641

Looks exactly like the J Burger version to me, but without the engraving.

I'll update this thread with customs costs, fitting instructions when it turns up. :)

---------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: arrived this morning, no customs costs as it was valued at $5.

It is the Burger Version, complete with engraving.

EDIT: tried and failed to fit, see page 4. :(

Isn't this the sort of thing you'd find on a 1970s british sports car mark?!

Prevents you losing power from 'coking'.

All direct injection engines (not BMW necessarily) suffer from inlet valve 'gunk' (from the block breather mainly). In the good old days it was constantly washed off with petrol by the injectors, as they were mounted in the inlet manifold. Move the injectors into the cylinders, and the PCV gunk just builds up and up as it bakes on to the red hot inlet valves. That leads to serious power loss and misfires.

The current BMW answer is to shot blast the inlet valves with crushed walnut shells regularly, but it's not cheap!

Will be following this with interest. Had a catch can installed on my s3, was always interesting to see the crap that came out of it on emptying.

Another (small) compensation for only having a N52 engine I suppose, what with it's ancient way of injecting fuel...

Do you just shovel coal into the furnace on those engines?

How soon is this likely to be a problem into a car's life? I've done about 2200 miles in mine so is it too early for any coking to have ocurred?
I'm thinking of modifying the engine once it's out of warranty so this seems like a good way of keeping it healthy until then.

Must admit, I'm watching this closely too. I've heard they can be a but smelly, which would be a deal breaker for me. I like the idea in principle though, I imagine they'd be engineered in if they didn't require emptying so often.

Actually I prefer to use a small and frail child with TB to do it for me...

If you vent the PCV to the atmosphere it will stink.

I believe this Catch Can is a sealed system, so shouldn't smell in theory (except when you're emptying it every 6 months or so). If it smells I will let everyone know, and probably remove it myself.

It a progressive thing, so I'd hope after just 2k on fresh oil I'd hope it still looks good in there. It's rare to see serious DI engine problems before 30k, but by the time you get misfires you will have lost performance already. The inlet valves are very carefully designed for maximum air flow + a little tumble.

My Can's getting fitted to a brand new engine, I don't want to fire engine oil at red hot valves, it can only end one way....

Gents,

OCC is one solution to help reduce gunk in the inlet tract and thru intercooler piping.

Another way is to leave car as-is and take your car out once a month a literally blow the cobwebs out of it.

4500rpm + for 15-20mins in the appropriate gear for the road/conditions.

Simple and probably more fun too....

Or both! :D

Once the gunk is burnt on, I'm unsure how I'd blow it off again? Do you have any more info please BP? Genuinely interested, not trying to start a keyboard war! :beerchug:

My advice would be to change the engine oil more regularly, old oil is worse for it (as it will contain more petrol and water).

This seemed to be a regular mod on R56 mini cooper S's. There are many threads about it on the forums there. Its a bit annoying that how much this is talked about new cars dont come with any way to resolve the issue
