BMW M2 vs Porsche Cayman 718

Post by BMWBoss » Thu Jul 05, 2018 6:29 pm

Hi guys i am very interested in buying either an M2 or Porsche Cayman 718. I would appreciate some advice from those of you that have driven both cars specifically in terms of:

1. Grip especially on damn/cold roads
2. Handling
3. Comfort
4. Overall fun

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

I presume you are talking Cayman S? I have owned a non turbo Cayman in both the S and standard car and test drove a 718 when they first came out. I'll be honest I preferred the 987 and 981 generations. Just thought that they were better packages and those engines suited the car better. Not that I dislike turbos. I love them!

From my half day test drive with the 718 I'd say:

Grip was great and handling was absolutely spot on. Comfort was ok I'd say on par with my M2. Was it a fun car to drive? Yes. But I wouldn't replace my M2 with one at all, I find it so much fun to drive.

Now the Cayman R that I could have bought pretty cheap :confused1: damn I kick myself that I didn't snap that up at the time

I’ve just sold my 981 Boxster S for the M2 due to family commitments.

Apart from comfort, it beat the M2 hands down on grip and handling. They’re both fun but in different ways. I had both my engine and pdk remapped by Cobb and they car was insane. I too went to get a 718 but changed my mind after driving both the 718 and 981.

I almost went for a 718 S instead of the M2.

Had one for the weekend from Porsche and loved it!

My thoughts...
Handling is immense. You can really feel the lower centre of gravity in its responsiveness. Was very direct. More so than the M2.
Comfort was fine. The car I drove had pasm and it was good with 20” wheels.
Grip, hard to comment on the 718, but it didn’t feel lacking. Then nor does the M2. The front grip on the M2 never ceases to amaze me.

The main issues for me were,
2 seats, it would normally only get used by me, but it would mean I could never use it with my kids or for a family run. Too much money in something that I’d have to leave at home.
The noise! It just isn’t a Porsche soundtrack. It’s not a ‘bad’ noise, just a bit crappy and all volume with no actual music to it. The older 981 engine and the N55 sound infinitely better.
The amount of money needed on options to get a sensible spec! They don’t even have climate as standard! That takes the p*ss imo. My spec would have been £14k in options and that wasn’t even going for carbon interior parts!

The M2 is a brilliant car, I genuinely don’t know what I’d replace it with other than a 991 Gts that I’ve always wanted but can’t afford!

For me in terms of performance you can only really compare the 718s as the 718 whilst still fantastic just felt down on power in comparison and I’m not particularly a fast driver, it just lacked the shove of the m2. The standard 718 is still bloody expensive though, isn’t it still more than an m2 allowing for discounts?

So on I went, 718s problem being the 718s was massively more when I looked as the options list was huge. Basically cost ruled it out.

For me the M2 sounds better than both, for me as much fun but isn’t so planted. The m2 with the discounts is far cheaper which swung me along with the noise. Money no option I would have the 718s over the m2 as it sounds decent enough and handles and looks the dogs.

The M2 works as an every day car. It's got 4 seats and a good boot.

The 718s is faster and handles better. That's to be expected as it's a small 2 seater sports car. It's not a like for like car.

The 4 cylinder engines will struggle to convince many.

You'd need to try yourself to see. It all depends what you really need and can live with.

OP are you buying new?

If you are you would be looking at M2 Competition which moves the game on significantly.

Cayman 718S vs original M2, I’d say Cayman every time. It would be a tougher decision against the M2C.

4 pot engine is a hairdryer - also a rip-off.

718 is a good car if you have another car, the M2 is probably not as focused, but can be a car you do more with.

I've owned 987R (with sports exhaust) & 981S previously and have test driven a Cayman 718S (with sports exhaust) and now own a M2..

The 2 previous NA Caymans were a fantastic drive and the flat 6 howl was truely a special sound track to experience.. I was some what disappointed with the 718 Cayman as the engine sound (which is a big part of the expernence IMO).. It actually sounds OK for a 4 pot but the engine tone it'self is no longer a special sound like other flat 6 Porsches.. I actually had a bit of a headache after switching the sports exhaust on for too long which I never used to get with previous cars!!

The M2 may not be as poslished in the handling close to the limit and perhaps doesn't feel as special (Porsche being a true sports car) but thats not to say the M2 doesn't feel special as it certainly does.. the 6 cyl engine and added practicality certainly more than makes up making the M2 a better package than the 4cyl 718 in my opinion..

In truth both are excellent cars and I'm sure there will be no regrets with either purchases but I would suggest an extended drive with sports exhaust switched on to see if you get the same headache from the sound as I did (you could always not tick the option of the sports exhaust though)

BMW M2 vs Porsche Cayman 718

Post by OrtonM135i » Fri Jul 06, 2018 12:52 pm

There’s a great article in EVO magazine on these and the TTRS

http://www.evo.co.uk/group-tests/19053/ ... -vs-bmw-m2

My personal opinion is based on having my LCI M2 and previously owned a 987 Cayman S

The Cayman was the best sounding car I’ve ever driven or heard from inside as a passenger with it’s n/a flat 6 right behind the front seats, it had the Porsche sports exhaust option as wellImage

Noise was the greatest thing about that car to be honest, I loved the looks and loved how flat and composed it stayed in corners but noise was what made it special. This was the best car I’ve ever owned until the M2...

The M2 sounds good maybe an 8/10 compared to a 9.5/10 in the old cayman. Yes the M2 sta higher and therefore is not quite as good in terms of grip and slightly more body roll. However I much prefer and feel more confident with the handling and balance of the M2 not just saying that as an owner.

The M2 for me is more fun. Sounds much better than the 718 Cayman which is a huge part of the experience. Yes it will be not as good as the Cayman for grip and handling but actually the balance, turn in and throttle adjustability of the M2 is so good and so rewarding it would be my pick of the two.

The Cayman 981 however would be my pick over an M2 as it has everything because of that beautiful flat 6 howl.

How Porsche thought putting a four pot turbo behind the drivers head in a mid engine sports car would be a good idea is well beyond me!

I was considering both and unlike many on here went for the Porsche instead of the M2.

I test drove both but in the end the Porsche felt more special and handling/ composure is on a different level. The M2 sounded better for sure but with a few more miles on it the 718 sounds pretty decent when you are pushing on.

In the end it will probably come down to cost and what you're using it for. I have a few track days planned and handling/ brakes were what sold it for me - I also use mine everyday and didn't need the backseats.

Cost wise the Porsche (even as a standard 718 not an s) with not a ridiculous smattering of options will cost about £4K more than the M2 on PCP over a 3 year period, not taking any residual value that may/ may not be left at the end.

It comes down to personal circumstance but still feel I made the right decision - although may be controversial on this forum.
