Might be a silly question but.....

Post by captainoats » Wed Sep 21, 2016 11:28 pm

What exactly does all these chip ECU things do for the car? Am I expecting to see a huge BHP boost and/or MPG improvement? I don't know anything about these things and would be great to have a sticky post to explain what they actually do or what options there are.

I have an F20 118i petrol turbo and although 170bhp isn't going to win awards it isn't too bad. Saying that I have previously owned a ST 58 Focus, A Corolla Compressor, and an old RS Cosworth (back in the day) and I didn't tweak any of them as I was happy with the way they performed and left them as is. As I am hearing more and more people using these devices I am wondering if it is worth me looking at one but unsure how this may impact other engine components (me being a noob here) by putting extra strain on them or BMW pointing fingers at me when it goes in for a service.

Thanks and sorry if I am asking some daft questions here but we all have to learn and start somewhere :o :o :o

Nowadays cars memories are rewritten (aka 'flashed'), rather than different chips being fitted. As a very rough explanation, typically the turbo boost is increased supplying more oxygen to the cylinders, and more fuel is injected to keep the air/fuel ratio correct. There will be lots of other clever tweaks too, ignition, torque limiters removed, etc.

The result is lots more torque (and therefore power) on most cars. If you were to use the extra power 24/7 you would reduce the life expectancy of the gearbox/clutch/diff a little, but how much time do you really spend on full throttle? Most tuning can be detected by BMW if they really want to look for it.

I've never achieved increased mpg from injecting more fuel in (I usually lose around 1mpg), but some people claim to have made gains.

Thanks for your feedback on this. So looking at the post link it looks like a significant gain on the 118i engine. Has anyone ever had a challenge back from BMW on the tuning changes made to their systems and then rejecting any parts or service intervals?

You should assume that any and all modifications from factory spec will invalidate your warranty. Copperman05 had his HPFP claim rejected due to tuning. You might get lucky though.

Your 118i 177bhp gain an extra 55-65bhp minimum after the remap
I always advise people if they want to remap there new car the to do it after the 1st service
If you are worried about your warranty then by an after market warranty
All my F series cars (F10 M5, F20 M135i )have been remapped and I have never had a problem with any warranty at the main dealers
And it's all down to the dealer you take it to (all my cars are sign written with my company name )

Apologies for the stupid question and slight off-topic but what is an aftermarket warranty at a main dealer? Is this a case of approaching a BMW dealer and paying for a special warranty based on how your car is currently spec'd with remaps and mods?

Google "after market car warranty"

Make sure you read the small print
Don't go for the cheapest out there
You get what you pay for

But be honesty is the best policy
