218 Coolant Loss

Post by ian12591 » Thu May 10, 2018 1:35 pm

I have a 66 plate 218 GT covered 14000 miles back in Feb I noticed that there was no coolant in the expansion tank with then took about a litre to refill to the max mark.

Booked it into the local dealer who said they carried out a pressure test and found no issues and said along the lines that for the mileage it was usual for it to "use" that amount of coolant. I did feel at the time I was being fobbed off not something I expected from a BMW dealer. AS I cold not remember ever checking since I bought it thought may have been like that from new?

Looked after giving it a clean this weekend and found that again it has dropped below the min marker again and took about half a litre to refill since Feb it has cover 2000 miles. As I have been checking this weekly only in the last week has it lost this amount.

Before it goes back to the dealer again any idea where this could be going? There have been no wet patches on the drive and no issues driving it.

Hi Ian

We had a 218d M Sport Active Tourer and during the three year period of ownership we never suffered with any issues like this, as it's a coolant issue I'm positive other folks on here will certainly have a better knowledge of overall mechanics than me. There has to be a problem somewhere in the system and although I understand the principles of the cooling system I'm a little at a loss regarding what is the cause. 8)

B58s in the x40is suffer with coolant loss, often it is a faulty header tank cap.
