Struggling to remove fishy odour...

Post by jjosh-uk » Sun Aug 19, 2018 4:11 pm

You've all got dirty minds the lot of you. Ok anyway so...

Unfortunately last week during some spirited driving on the way back from the supermarket, a packet of fish fingers fell out of a shopping bag into the boot. Even more unfortunately, I hadn't noticed and had left the car the next day for a week at the airport in the 30 degree heat. Lets just say the whole interior of my beloved car has developed a bit of a feminine hygiene problem.

I've tried air fresheners, washing the boot carpet, leaving the car with boot and windows open in garage etc. but still the odour lingers on. Its been about 3 weeks now and it seems to be slowly getting better but i'm worried that i'm just getting used to it!

Any thoughts and advice? :x

By 'boot carpet' do you mean the semi-rigid false floor? Not sure what they're like on the 2er, but i spilled diesel in the back of my F20 as it was a right pain to get out - it still smells up close but doesn't affect the car thankfully. I literally had to soak the thing several times with gallons of soapy water and keep sucking it out with a wet&dry vac.

The problem is that the whole thing is porous, so the smell will be deeply soaked in.

So basically:
Lots of hot soapy water, just pour it on. Use white vinegar (no pun intended) and shake n vac (or bicarb).
Suck it all out from the top AND bottom.
Repeat a few times.
Leave in the sun (i just left mine on the washing line for a week).

Or... Just buy a new one off ebay and save yourself several hours.

I’d look into pet urine odour removal spray. I think it has enzymes that help tackle the bacteria.

I left RX8 for 6 months and it developed a rather nasty and smelly mould infestation, wiped it clean but it still smelled so wiped all surfaces down with white vinegar and wow, smell went and mould killed off for good.
