Hi guys,

I've just joined the forum, to basically see if you guys have had any bad experiences with a stage 1.

I've got a quote from Evolve automotive who are known quite well for their remapps on BMW's.

Is there anything in particular I need to look out for when remapping? Like are the any common faults with any engine parts to go wrong?

I appreciate remapping voids the warranty, but BMW only really look to blaming a remap if it's going to be a costly.

I've also been told the B58 is very strong and it can handle more power than what a stage 1 can improve it by.

Has anyone who's got a stage 1 had any issues?

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure if I had a bad experience, but it wasn't great either. Took mine for a second opinion after having a young lad at SA tuning tune mine (I wasn't a member of the forum at the time). I wasn't happy with the end result. But had 411bhp and 600nm after the second opinion, which is still a bit low, but my word feels fast none the less. not unusual to hit 425+ with a stage one.

Not heard of the company you mention, but the best bet is to ask on here what people recommend based on where you live. Just let us know the county you're based...

The b58 will have no issues with a stage 1, it's far too strong to worry about 430 odd bhp and under.

Keep on top of oil changes, and let it warm up as is standard practice.

You'll be pleased with the right result I'm sure! The B58 is a very capable, solid piece of engineering.

If you are Bedford based, (going by the company you have mentioned a address) I'd recommend BW chip tune near Heathrow, or Tommy from velocity tuning who is right near me in Colchester. He was amazing and really honest and knowledgeable. He specialises with bmw tuning.

I realise both are a bit of a drive, but better to go somewhere you can trust. I wish I had first time round!

Yes. I've used Evolve several times real enthusiasts and very knowledgeable.

Thanks for this, it's reassuring to know about how solid the engine is, I pencilled in to get the remap done on Monday afternoon, so hoping I can come back with some good news! I'm based in Hertfordshire and only heard good things about Evo, so thought I'd just go for it. Thanks for the advice and tips gents! Really appreciated 😬

Update** remap is done but haven't quite got the results I was hoping for.

Stock run 362bhp
Mapped run 414bhp

I ran it on Tesco's momentum 99.

They did say Shell v-power I would've got more and it's what they recommend.

The power delivery is definitely a lot smoother, and the mid range torque is very noticeable.

Think after all that I'm a bit gutted I didn't get even 430bhp, don't see how switching to v power will give me and extra 14/25bhp.

Unless it gets quicker over time &#x1f937-1f3fd-2642;

I'm beginning to think, after my own strange results, that a lot of these dynos aren't very accurate!

To think I had 300bhp as 'stock' even though, as we all saw, they let off the throttle at 5000rpm, then I ended up with 384bhp after the tune.

Then 411bhp after taking it for a second opinion. Which I trust as tommy at velocity is very honest with rave reviews.

Seems to me a lot of dynos are out of wack, and/or the tuners are playing games.

Go for a second dyno run elsewhere, I think it's worth a second opinion for the sake of £60 quid...

Makes me glad I went the BM3 route. 421hp on stage 1 with Tesco 99. £42 more and I get to flash stage 2 for an additional 15-20hp.

This is one of the problem with tuners. I've gone to many dyno days where punters have shown up keen to see what the latest tune was putting out, often to find out it produces less power than the tune they had on before. One poor soul had a Ford RS, had it mapped at one tuner. Then splashed out on a mountune map. Turns out he lost 15hp in the process. Same car, same dyno.

Forget the figures and focus on the drive.

I also have an Evolve Stage 1 tune on my M140i. Had it done a year ago with my car also making 362HP stock. With the Stage 1, it made 433HP and around 640NM torque. The only modification I had at the time was a BCS midpipe. If it makes any difference, my car is a pre-OPF model.

Nonetheless, it has transformed the car into a totally different animal!

The pull it has in sport is definitely noticeable, I just expected more I guess considering the stock run was 362hp. But who knows &#x1f937-1f3fd-2642; Im going to fill up with v power and take for a second opinion. My car is 18 so don't know if that's pre OPF... I had a back box delete and mod by EMP A while ago.

Question

Since I've driven it now, I can hear the exhaust sounds different when I get nearer to the rev limiter. Sounds like more air is going in/out. Is that normal?

Yes perfectly normal, you have an extra 50hp worth of air flowing through the engine.

Perfect 😅 thanks for that, thought it was my luck something would go wrong.

So.. I've attached the Dyno sheet, what do you guys think.

A couple of my friends whoa aren't Stage 1 experts have mentioned the power looks very erratic and not smooth like other ones they have seen on the 140's, but since a few of you guys have had it done, wanted to get your thoughts.

I have mentioned all this to Evolve who have said if i'm not happy with the Map they will provide a refund.

But i would rather make that decision sooner rather than later.

Did they promise you 430bhp?

Who's to say your car on another dyno wouldn't show 420, 425 or more.... would that suffice?

If you got a refund, what's plan B?

I'd imagine someone who knows more might come along and say that Evolve haven't applied such a strong smoothing factor to the graph, or something along those lines.

I did ask whether it goes above 430hp and their exact response was "yes some go more than that but we quote the lower figure"

So i'm not saying that's a promise but that would make me believe 430hp would be a minimum.

also i did ask them about the graph and they said "our dyno does not have graph smoothing like those other 2" (i showed them an example of 2 other dyno sheets from other Tuners"

Well and truly this is a first for me as I've never got any of my cars mapped so wanted to see from you guys, if this seems a bit muggy lol

Ignore the dyno chart, how does the car drive? Does it pull smoothly through the Rev range??

Definitely feels a lot smoother, noticeably nicer and the speeds just keeps climbing.

Think i'm going to just put this to bed now, just think the dyno maybe wasn't as accurate as i'd hoped.
