M140 new software update horrible drive

Post by GVR76 » Sat Jan 05, 2019 4:14 pm

Can someone help me. M140 approx 18 months old. Had suspension problem (bumping sound) en left speakers would stop working when driving over a ramp. Now the garage has had a “known” issue and needed a full software update. Car has come back driving like crap! No more enginesounds with upshifting (the six drum rolls) or pop from the exhaust when letting go of accelerator in sports or sports+ When slowing down. It looks like the revs stay a lot higher and the gearshift is way too smooth to enjoy. The car has lost its spark big time and is more like a “regular” v6.... any tips or advice ... at them moment feel like trading it in for a 3 or 520 and throwing on a stage 2...

Mine doesn’t do pops or bangs or anything like that if it helps? Guess I don’t know what I am missing, :)

Seems to be a common theme from those who’ve had software updates recently?

Mine doesn’t need a service for a while but not looking forward to such a negatively received software update when it does go in!

Be pretty impressed if BMW could have turned your inline 6 into a v6 during a service

However your not the first person to report this happening, maybe they are borking them again like they did with the E82 n55 many years ago

I am just going to have to give them the car and solve it. It is like driving a noisy hybrid ... last bmw was with them 19 times till I got a recall from Germany on the car ... this might be the last bmw for me if I have to keep going back every couple of weeks ...

Auto or Manual?

Hard to judge if this is a huge issue or just one amplified because we browse the forums.

I try to not look for “problems” on the forum;) but this one I was not aware off .. switched of the aucoustic sound today and the car seriously sounds only like a 125 on steroids ... (tuned with open air filter) it is also the massive lag in the gears ... and start/stop works in sports mode WTF great for a quick start ... oh no let’s wait for the engine to kick in first :( :( :( seriously could cry ... this is the second bmw that is being killed by the garage ... last one was a 330e after 19 times in six month told them to keep it or drive it into the canal ... (they recalled the entire it to Germany in the end due to the large amount of problems with it... was going to be taken apart for study)

Mine doesn’t either- only had it a couple of weeks from new. A bit disappointing compared to my wife’s Mini JCW!

Your car won’t make the pops and bangs if it has a PPF installed.

We had a Mini Cooper S with the JCW tuning pack and trick exhaust and my M140i (March 2017), though not quite as loud, has exactly the same characteristics. Even pops in Comfort occasionally. I used to find using super-unleaded would exaggerate it on the Mini.

I'll be declining the software updated come service time

Seriously? - Am I reading this correctly? The car drives "horrible" because it is making less / a different noise? Oh .. and the gearshift is smoother. That's horrible as well?!

Wonder if the new ‘post july’ full fat ///M cars are still popping
If my Pre PPF car still doesn’t pop at all it must be a software update thing
When others are making it pop how are you driving? Sport or sport plus mode, bury throttle then lift off? Are you red lining it to make it pop?

So the only way to get any pop is sport plus. Sport is nothing at all. With the update also came a gearbox update and the revs stay higher between gears with a dead peak where nothing happens. Also it now always coasts when you let go of the accelerator like it does in eco mode (not used often ;)). If you try to accelerate when it coasts it takes quit a moment before anything happens. Like a delay (best explanation) also the best way to describe the drive is like the car is just screaming high in its revs

Checked mine is defiantly a pre pff model and tried to film under the car to get serial numbers of the exhaust. The number of the muffler between cat and end is not recognized ... annoyingly it looks in better state then the rest of the exhaust. But not enough of a difference between the rest to confirm the have retrofitted a new system or extra box for it. Maybe someone has a picture of pre and post pff exhaust to see the difference ( been searching online for hours without any luck)
