F20/F21 M brakes on E82 - Done

Post by Ben GT » Thu Oct 24, 2013 3:16 pm

Well kind of...

Big thanks to Marco for his patience recently with all the questions I have asked. I'm most grateful :)

So the brakes were pretty much a straight swap on the front but the rears don't fit... yet ;)

On the fronts all was OK in terms of fittings although a few things to be aware of;
1) 18's don't fit over them. You need at least 5mm spacers (I have 261m wheels). I have fitted some temporary 5mm ones but I am waiting on some hubcentric 10mm spacers.
2) The brake discs have 14mm holes for bolts on the F2x, the E8x only has 12mm.

Brake wear sensor didn't need to be swapped, unplugged and re-plugged no alerts or anything :)

The rears won't fit at the moment because of the discs. The hub on the F2x discs isn't as deep as the E82 and therefore it wouldnt fit on properly for the handbrake etc. I hope to find out whether 135i discs may resolve this issue...

So the pics, excuse the quality and the state of the car. I'll try and get her cleaned up and some better pics soon.

Glad you got sorted... fronts at least..

I personally think the Brembo 6 pots (BMWP and 135i) brakes gave me more feel than these on my M135i.

Well these don't feel as good at the moment as the standard 125i setup.

Hopefully just pads bedding in...

Yes on the front. Don't think I could really fit any bigger ones on!

Not sure. Rears I can measure they are 360mm and 28mm thick.

Fronts weren't much bigger

Problem with these rears is the hub not being deep enough, much shallower

Do you know the thickness of the front discs?

Drive flange then! Fronts may not have been bigger, possibly same size but thicker. I didn't measure so can't say for sure

wow, they look great, but I'm not at all surprised it feel worse at the moment. With that much imbalance between the front braking force and rear braking it will crab when you brake hard. It's the car equivalent of doing an endo on a bike. Once you have bigger brakes on the rear it will feel and brake much better.

Thanks, I'm quite certain 135i brakes will get me round the issue...
