Post by BMWBoss »

I know know..... wrong cars in the wrong forum section however i was hoping you all would be kind enough to share your thoughts/experiences on these two amazing cars that can be had for around £575 per month with no deposit. I have driven both cars and i simply cannot make a decision! Please help!

It would be the M340i for me. I don’t get the 8 series at all. Why would anyone want a car that is so large yet so impractical? And if I was spending that kind of money on a coupe it certainly wouldn’t be an 8 Series

Well you did ask for opinions :D
Now - 2018 M2 Competition, LBB, DCT.
Then - Audi S4 Black Edition, M235i, M135i, 120d M Sport Coupe, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Celica T Sport 190, VW Golf GTi Mk4, Saxo VTR

I quite like the eight, it’s certainly better in the flesh than it is in pictures but it is massive.

If looking at the eight, have you looked into leasing it? There were some crazy seals recently. There’s a few chaps on PH who have leased them on £3k down and circa £350 a month. One guy is less than £300 a month but he only does 6k miles per year. Those lease deals are surely depreciation beating.

Personally I’d chose the 340 mainly because the 840 is too big.

The M340iX is superb though didn't wow me as much as I thought it would. The 8 is quite special, not sure about an 840d though I think I'd probably take an 840i over an M340iX saloon though probably not over a Touring.

If you can live with a coupe rather than saloon id have the 8 series all day long. Look great in person. But it is bigger than the 3 series so considerations about parking etc need to be made beforehand. But the other poster is right, id be going for an 840i rather than the D.

As your also looking at the 340i id assume your annual mileage wont be that high, a diesel would cause problems with small journeys.

I’d take the 8 every day of the week over a 3 Series. The quality of the car, the way it drives, the sense of occasion, verses a rep mobile with a decent engine. No brainer.

How did they both drive? Does the 8-Series feel more sport or does it feel big and heavy?

The 8 didn't feel all that special to me.

Still the same weird single panel for the gear surround buttons, that felt flimsy, same as the 3er.
Still the same gear lever, but made of transparent plastic so it looked like a jewel, and naff, vs the sold item in the 3er.
Same digital dashboard design, so same same.
Leather was an improvement, but marginal. The top leather in the last model M3/4 was nicer than the new 8.

I'd go for the 3 series because the 8 isn't what it used to be imo.

Then again the 3 is showing it's middle aged spread now. It doesn't look lithe and svelte any more... it's a bit fat around the wheel arches, and even the huge 19" wheels are starting to look a bit lost in the side on bulk.

I guess that’s the downside of trying to get all of the cats to feel similar inside...impressive in a 1 series but not good enough in an 8 series. Agree re the clear gear selector which looks really naff to my eyes.

M340i for me all day, I just don't like the 8 series. I've never liked big coupes though and the 8 series is humongous.

The 8-Series only stands out if you spec an individual colour. If not then it's meh. It's very much a cruiser and unless that's what you want, there is a risk of getting bored with the car after 6 months.

I would rather have a full loaded M4 or a leased 730d than an 8-series.
