Nice to see alignment done the old school way! Is your tyre wear even?

Yeah, other than one front tyre being newer than the other due to a bulge in the sidewall. The rears have worn pretty evenly so far.

Had a nice run down to C&M yesterday and being nice and dry it was the first time I was able to drive to car a bit harder since fitting the springs and getting the alignment done. It does feel better, not night and day but there is definitely an improvement with a bit less pogoing from the rear end on a B road. It’s stills loses its composure, but not quite as soon as it did. There doesn’t appear to be any negative impact on ride quality. Hopefully my underbody brace will be here soon - it’ll be interesting to see if I notice any difference because there seems to be two camps; one think it’s noticeable whereas others thinks it’s a placebo affect. It’s not expensive so I think it’s worth a shot. I think the car sits pretty well now.

C&M was very relaxed for a warm summers day, there’s less cars allowed in and your limited to a two and a half hour slot, but it was still nice to get out for a bit and sit in the sun, look at cars and have a bite to eat. The GT40 replica was bloody lovely and the owner a really nice bloke happy to chat, open it up etc. It made one hell of a noise when he left.

It might be nice from a nostalgic perspective but it's absolutely not how to do an alignment in 2020! Unless it was free it's a rip-off. There is absolutely zero chance it can be as accurate as laser and I'd go say far as saying it will be a poor alignment by modern standards, you can't measure 1/10's of a minute with string.

@OP - can you post the alignment sheet? I assume they fudged one to give you?

I don’t get a before and after sheet, just the settings that they applied for what they considered to be their fast road set up. So far it feels Ok. A friend had his 125 aligned there and is very happy with it.

In my experience using a Hunter machine means naff all. I went so a so called alignment specialist that was raved about on forums and they did a dire job on my E46. It was bobbins.

I agree with you about bad operators of precision equipment.

Regardless, I'll always prefer lasers over string when I want an accurate measurement and I'll always ask for a written report when I pay someone to measure or adjust something for me.

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't be happy with the result, if you are you are and that makes me glad. It's just that you're taking a path that I wouldn't recommend for anyone casually browsing this thread.

If I were in your position I'd now go and pay a shop to give me a 'before' print out with no adjustments, at least that way I'd have a record of settings that I like.

I’m tempted to take it to Centre Gravity down the road from me in a few months for a full geo / chassis set up but it’s sodding expensive. They’re supposed to be very very good at what they do. A friend of a friend drives his GT3 RS down from Knaresborough for them to work on it.

It’s be interesting to see what they read the figures as compared to what I was told it is now.

I don’t worry about a before measure because I knew it was way out after fitting the springs.

All good, I don't want to give you a hard time after all! IMHO a corner balance is total overkill for about 95% of circumstances and, of the remaining 5%, probably 2% is bragging rights only. "Geo'd bro".

If I had a GT3 RS on the other hand then I'd spend as much time at the track as I did on the street and for that reason alone I'd want an optimised 4 corner setup and would pay for it. Any other scenario and a full-on balanced setup is wasted IMO.

Yeah, it’s total overkill. I’ve normally found BMW’s KDS spot on but they don’t really want to know because it’s been lowered so will only guarantee a good alignment on stock springs or the M Performance jobbies. I was only thing Centre Gravity because of their reputation and the fact it’s 10 minutes down the road from me. I’m a bit wary of just chucking it on a hunter machine after a woeful experience with a so called specialist in the past. At the moment it all seems OK, I’ll keep an eye on tyre wear etc and get it done on lasers if this seems off or if I decide it doesn’t feel right.

Another wee upgrade for my car. I know they paper filters are pretty good but I figured it can’t hurt.

Image

Not really had chance to drive the car properly since fitting it because...

Image

I fractured my wrist last night after having a disagreement with the ground whilst out on my mountain bike. Balls. Puts my NC500 trip in jeopardy too.

Had CarPlay retrofitted today, big improvement on using the Amazon music app through that compared to idrive, sounds better too. Plus it’s cheaper for the next three years than paying BMW £180 each year for a data connection.

Congrats! How is music browsing? Quick and fluid?

What improvements are you expecting from the filter?

Browsing through my music library is a million times better through CarPlay; it’s one long list whereas through idrive the app puts it into pages. It seems much more fluid and gets it back to what it was like through Deezer and my year of free data connection.

Don’t really know what I’m expecting from the filter. I doubt it’ll make much difference but it wasn’t expensive and my stock one looked pretty grotty after a year.

Ill be interesting to hear feedback on the filter. An easy mod that makes sense, but reported to make little difference in these cars.

I always follow your posts on PH anyway!
