Removing top-dashboard compartment

Post by 128MB »

Hello

I'm trying to mount an aftermarket gps on the dashboard of my '08 118D.
And i tried to remove the top storage compartment on the dashboard but after removing the 2 torx screws, it is still stuck ...

Am i missing hidden bolts or a clamp or anything?

Also: can i easily get to 12v and the aux-in of the radio to plug in to the gps?

Thank you!

I presume you have removed the two screws at the back, hidden by the insert? There are two other screws (possibly three, although I couldn't understand whether the the third actually did anything). To get to those, you have to remove the central vents. To do that, get a thin credit card and work your way along between the top of the vent unit and the dash. You sort of push the credit card down toward the floor and the vent unit pivots from the bottom. Once it is free, make sure you disconnect the wiring for the buttons before fully removing. Then in front of you, you should see the remaining screws.

Here's an article in fitting the storage bin in that area - http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=421466. There's lots of "how to's" on 1addicts, just need to search through.

There's also an article in fitting Sat Nav in the dash in the PDF "how-to's" on here http://www.babybmw.net/howtos/how_to-_i ... system.pdf - but note that it a big (9mb) file.
