E81 with F20 Brembos - any reason I shouldn't look further at these wheels?

Post by wrevilo23 »

The stock 208M wheels on my car are pretty scabby and I'd like to change to run a square tyre setup. As a result I am looking for new wheels!

Originally I was considering a lighweight 18x8.5 setup, but I think I'd rather spend more money on suspension than wheels. I've therefore lowered my budget and have identified a number of 18x8 ET43 wheels that should look good on the car and should still be a little lighter than stock:
The only complication is that I am running the F20 Brembo front calipers on my car, which the 208M wheels clear by 1mm or less. I'm hoping that the move to a 8" wheel at ET43 compared to 7.5" ET47 would give me sufficient clearance. I have found pictures of all these wheels on other BMWs with Brembo front calipers, but is there anything specific about the E81 that would have the potential to cause issue?

Thanks!

Thanks, and you don't see an issue with F20 brakes on an E81 that wouldn't be an issue on the F20?

Nope, once you've swapped the calipers they're basically identical.

E87 have less arch clearance than an F20, but 8" ET43 should fit nicely. Isn't usually an issue until you pass ET35.

I'm going to check clearance to the strut, but is there any reason why a 235/40 tyre on an 8" ET43 wheel wouldn't work at the front?

8" ET43 should fit nicely. Arch clearance isn't usually an issue until you pass ET40 with a 235mm on.

I've ordered the Alutec Drive in silver for a very reasonable £414. I'll get some BMW centre caps and they should look like OEM wheels. Here's the best picture I've found of the silver finish whilst trawling the web (right click, view image for big):
