M135i 2014 Speaker upgrade from stock

Post by BennosBimmer » Fri Sep 20, 2019 12:28 pm

Wanting to upgrade the crappy speakers on my M135i 2014 - they have the standard ones and they really aren't that great. It's got the underfloor subwoofers but the bass is distorted and weak. Anyone know where would be a good place to start to get some decent speakers in? Halfords maybe? Or just get a decent amp?

Cheers.

Honestly, I'd junk the lot. New speakers, amp, and add tweeter pods of course.

No, not Halfords. Lots of the fitments are BMW specific. Have a look at the offerings from Focal, Vibe, Eton, Rainbow, BSW, Gladen, etc.

What sort of cost are we looking at for this?

Quite interested in doing this too. £1200 is a lot of dosh though. May just stick to Straight6 FM.

Cheers for the responses. Is the HK system not that good?

I've got the 3 door with that crappy plastic where the tweeters normally are - I'd imagine this would be hard to change out.

Wouldn't want to spend any more than £500 ideally - if anyone's got any specific recommendations that would be great!

I'd save up a bit longer, double your budget.

It's not worth upgrading to the HK. Save more and get something better. HK is not worth what it costs in these cars unlike some of the higher series Beemers

I personally think the HK system in the 1ers is great, a massive better difference over the advanced loud speaker standard set up (or what ever the standard system is called, which I think is still pretty decent for a standard system we have it in the 120d) But when you hear the HK systems in the other Beemers ie 3-5series for example the 1er falls quite a bit short in sound quality compared to the bigger bm's HK systems. For example in the 1ers it is 360watt amp 12 speaker Class D tech where as in my old boys X335d it is a 16 speaker 600 watt Logic 7 surround sound tech, the sound and quality difference is massive between the two systems.

This is my specialist field if you want any help or advice.

Waz at B&B Audio concepts does offer great Value for money with the X-Fire equipment but there as so many choices available you really should try to find a car audio company with a BMW demo car to have a listen.

Its also worth mentioning that you wont get a GREAT sound by just changing the speakers and adding an amplifier you MUST get the additional sound deadening for the doors, and make sure they add some to the underseat woofers too. It has 3 advantages

1 it stops unwanted resonation (especially from the Underseat woofers)
2 it reduces road noise (the door amplifies the road noise just like a drum)
3 it makes the speakers sound so much better

If you are in the area (Worthing) you are welcome to come and have a listen to mine (it has won awards in EMMA - audio competitions) but I did opt for a full Audison system with built in Digital Sound Processor to allow for near perfect tuning. But with this complete system you wont get much change from £2000 with installation

If you do want want any advice, please just ask

Jeremy

I had a HK system in my 240, so far I have replaced all the speakers (apart from the subs) with Etons, they are pretty cheap and do sound much better than the HK. I was tempted by audison or Focal but after speaking to a few audio shops (one that did not even sell eton) they all said to go with the etons. Lucikly the HK system has a amp which does an ok job.

Next plan at some stage is to upgrade the amp (expensive) and the subs (expensive) but not sure when, happy enough how it is now.

Jez - When I did my doors I did around the speaker hole and folded back and any bare metal, would you remove the BMW lining and replace that with some dynamat?

Just a quick opinion on the two possible BMW upgrades. Ive had 140s with both the ‘business’ and the HK upgrade, I honestly cannot tell any difference between them. The business upgrade is just fine, don’t waste more money on the HK upgrade,

Possible to do aftermarket speaker, sound deadening when the car is leased/pcp?

Quotes for an all-round upgrade at a couple of London audio outfits were in the £2k range. The car is not exactly quiet when on the move, so yeeeaaah no thanks.
