Mazda Rx8

Post by Justchris17 »

Has anyone owned a Mazda rx8 who can share their experience?

I’m thinking of getting one for a third car they are very cheap now. I’m aware of reliability issues but a big fan of the idea of high revving engine, lsd and amazing handling I’ve always had a soft spot for them

I had one from new in the early 2000's, was great but I was filling the tank 3 times a week, communting to Windsor from Manchester at the time.
Barely managed to get down to Windsor without filling up.
Only had a single issue and that was flooding the engine, a known fault at the time, Mazda came out and cranked it over for about 40 minutes before it started. There was a recall for a better alternator/starter motor, or both, I cannot remember. Oil consumption was fine as well, although others had issues from what I remember.
Overall though a great car, was just too expensive for me to run at the time, 6 months later I sold it

My brother in law had one, consumed fuel and oil at an unbelievable rate, it had a proper drinking problem.

Yeah I’m aware of the drinking oil problem and less than 20mpg but as a third car probs do 1000-2000 miles a year just the odd weekend and summer car so I’m not too concerned about that.

Roger if running cost wasn’t a problem would you of kept it?

Marco did your brother in law like it apart from it’s drinking problem?

The steering was ace, but he sold it pretty quickly. I think he was already something like the 12th owner! Didn't like hot-starts either, iirc.

Haven't had one but know someone who did.

Same story really, drinks oil and fuel, which is simply a trait of a rotary engine. Torque isn't great (relatively) which is why it relies on high revs to produce any decent power. Enthusiasts love them, especially if you're used to motorbikes too as the engine characteristics are similar in that you push the revs up and keep it in the sweet spot to get the best out of them to enjoy.

People who buy them as a 'normal' car sell them pretty soon after as running costs are far too high. The reason they are usually cheap is no-one really wants to commit to the upkeep of them.

As a third car just for fun though, I reckon would be a great alternative to the norm, either that or a S2000 (would be my choice) which has similar properties in that it's a high revving engine, but without the oil consumption etc.

S2K's are £££ though, RX8s are uber bargains if youre brave. Handling is awesome, great choice for a 3rd car IMO :)

Yeah S2000 is too expensive for what I’m looking for, for a 3rd car. The Rx8 is appealing to me as it is like you say different to the norm, quirky and unique. Requiring a Engine rebuild wouldn’t scare me that much either as rotary revs specialist do rebuild for 1800 with 12 months warranty.

The recommendations I've seen say to buy a really cheap one that already has compression issues with the engine then immediately get it rebuilt so then you'll know it's a decent quality engine. :D

Had an RX8 about 10 years ago. Was a great car but just too thirsty for a main car. Only downside for a 2nd or 3rd car would be the really high tax cost. Assuming it's still the same £450+?

This might be a stupid question but if any of you have summer cars does it work if you SORN car over winter and pay tax monthly/6 months then SORN again?

Probably, maybe, I changed it for a 330d, far more economical, but didn't have the fun of the RX8.
For a weekend car, then yes, so long as only two people in it, rear wasn't the most comfortable place and the suicide doors confused many passengers.

Yes. Sorn your car and cancel DD for road tax. You can claim back any months owed if you payed it in full. I would keep the insurance ongoing.
To get back on the road I think you just re tax it.
