It shows a pretty dull looking hatch with a slightly more SUV front end and they confirm what we already thought, that it would be a 2.0 4 pot with AWD based on the new FAAR front wheel drive platform.
What is interesting is that I assumed they would be gunning for A45 or maybe even RS3 territory with more power than the B58 M140i, which the 4WD should easily be able to handle.
However the article suggests power will be "around 300hp" which is notably less than we have now, backed up by the step down an M130 moniker.
No mention of transmission choice, but it would not surprise me if it was auto only to help with emissions and performance.

Do we think that's likely? If so, I predict a bonanza sales period for the last of the M140s!

I will happily hang on to my M140i after the PCP period as it will truly be the last of its breed...

That’s why I bought one.

When's the G42 M240i available to order Boss? 2021?
LCI came out H2 of 2017 so realistically that should mean release of the all new M230ix240igodonlyknows what its called
comes out around the start of 2021. bang on. Full year cycle is always 7 years production with LCI at 3.5 years as you know Marco.

There's been talk of a more powerful AWD Mini for a while, so they may well share the same platform and drivetrain exactly.

What BMW will weigh up is that of all the 1 series sold, the fact that they're RWD will barely feature as a reason why any were sold. A lot of people won't even know. Lowering the cost of production and improving practicality and running costs will be a no-brainer for them. It's just a shame it'll effect the M1XXi model too.

Still, if RWD and 6 cylinders are available in the 2 series coupe, that's something. The B58 will also be in the Z4 and new Toyota Supra I think.

It’s also worth pointing out that VW have decided to run with the Golf R 400 after stalling on it due to Diesel Gate.

They’ve seen the M2 / A45 AMG / RS3 market and are going after that customer base. Yes the 400 stands for 400bhp - the current test car has been using the 5 pot RS3 engine, however it’s more likely to run the 4 cylinder I would have thought..

When will the M140i cease production, this year or next? Or will they keep them going alongside the new FWD 1 series until the M130iX is launched?
For production costs, I'd expect them to end when all the RWD 1 series production ends, which should be either late this year or next year, with a gap of a year or so before the M130iX "halo" model launches.

I wonder if there will be a "final edition" run-out version...

I thought the Shadow Edition was the run out model.

The used vehicle prices should benefit from this. They'll be in high demand. I might buy another one!

The M140i is perfect for me, we wanted the big boot practicality of a hatchback where you can put the seats down, combined the tail-happy fun of a RWD manual sports car. And:
The M240i is saloon only :-(
The M2 is saloon only :-(
The 340i Touring only comes in flappy paddle, and is too big and heavy to throw around :-(

I have no interest in a 4WD 2L turbo hatch. I'd use it in RWD mode anyway, so it just adds weight an complexity for no reason. And the B48 engine is well down on the 370ft/lbs of torque you get from the beautiful B58. And could you fit any after-market differential like the Quaife I have on my M140i? I doubt it.

But I also understand that many 116i 118i and 120d owners won't care about RWD. They might prefer a cheaper motorised shopping trolley with more space inside. So it seems sensible for BMW to satisfy that demand with the new FWD 1-series and keep up their profit margins. We don't want them to go bankrupt after all.
But please keep the enthusiasts happy and make some more Ultimate Driving Machines. How about:
an M240i hatchback?
an M2 Touring :-)
an M2 Competition hatchback :-))

I would not expect a stampede but it may help residual prices as the new 1 series is going completely away from everything that a lot out there hold dear like RWD and 6 cylinders, plus if the new contender has less BHP that will only consolidate the future ranking of the 6 pot Mlites too..

I am hoping mine ticks all the boxes come next year being a fairly rare discontinued 3 door manual and has the 14 months only window of the cheap road tax aswell...

Not a hope in hell that i am going to get automotive wood with a 4 banger engine and i dare say many will think the same...
340BHP, manual shift ,£140 tax!!Got wood! :drive:

So 2er remains on the CLAR platform (i.e. same layout etc), whereas the 1er will move over to the FAAR platform (i.e. F/AWD) in 2019/20.

Disappointing news with the 1er, if I wanted that sort of thing I'd just buy a bloody Mercedes A45 AMG.
